Public health genomics: Anything new?
With
Dr. Fred Paccaud, MD, MSc.
Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, Lausanne Head, Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine, University Hospital Center, Lausanne, Switzerland.
Over the last decade or so, genomics is rapidly developing as a new perspective for epidemiological research and for clinical care. Both fields will have to cope with this new information, either as a new potential interaction in population medicine, or as a potent tool for personalized medicine. Some of these perspectives will be presented and discussed from a public health point of view.

More details:
After completing his medical training in Switzerland, Dr. Paccaud pursued his specialty in London. His research interests were first oriented towards public health information systems and health services. For the past fifteen years, he has pursued research in health transition, which focuses on the prevalence of chronic illnesses and the development of appropriate responses. This transition involves both developing countries, where degenerative diseases are rapidly becoming endemic, and developed countries, which are probably experiencing the final phase of the transition with a rapid increase of longevity.
