La FCI investit 4,2 millions pour appuyer 23 projets de recherche de McGill menés dans des laboratoires dotés d’un équipement à la fine pointe de la technologie

Aujourd’hui, à l’Université Laurentienne, l’honorable Kirsty Duncan, ministre des Sciences, a annoncé un investissement total de 52 millions de dollars provenant du Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans, de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI), pour financer 220 nouveaux projets d’infrastructure dans 51 universités aux quatre coins du pays. Parmi elles, au dernier tour de la course au financement, McGill mène le peloton, avec un impressionnant total de 23 projets, soit une valeur globale de 4,2 millions de dollars.

Créé pour aider les universités à recruter et à maintenir en poste les meilleurs chercheurs qui soient en leur assurant l’accès à des installations et à de l’équipement de pointe, le Fonds des leaders John-R.-Evans de la FCI donne aussi l’occasion aux établissements de présenter une offre concurrentielle de soutien à la recherche, jumelée au financement des coûts directs de la recherche par des organisations partenaires.

 « Ces derniers investissements accordés par la FCI permettent à McGill de donner un formidable élan aux efforts qu’elle déploie pour faire progresser la recherche dans des domaines aussi variés que le droit international du travail, la neurochirurgie du cerveau et de la moelle épinière guidée par l’image et l’étude des effets des changements climatiques dans les zones de haute latitude », a dit Martha Crago, vice-principale (recherche et innovation). « Non seulement le soutien de la FCI permet-il à l’Université d’attirer les plus brillants esprits scientifiques du monde, mais il rehausse également la capacité de McGill à contribuer à l’essor économique et social du Québec et du Canada. »

« Nos scientifiques doivent avoir accès à un équipement et à des outils des plus modernes pour mener des recherches révolutionnaires et faire des percées, et nous sommes déterminés à répondre à ces besoins », a affirmé l’honorable Kirsty Duncan, ministre des Sciences. « Leur réussite se traduira par une économie plus prospère et stimulera une communauté de chercheurs active ici, au Canada, et à l’étranger. »

Au nombre des lauréats de l’investissement de la FCI, mentionnons le professeur Rosaire Mongrain, du Département de génie mécanique. L’infrastructure que lui procurera le financement de la FCI viendra appuyer le programme de recherche intégrée du professeur Mongrain, destiné à mettre au point des implants biotechnologiques et des capteurs implantables de nouvelle génération. Ces techniques thérapeutiques contribueront à rétablir la fonction vasculaire ainsi qu’à surveiller la rigidité tissulaire associée au cancer, à la fibrose et aux maladies cardiovasculaires.

La professeure Lisa Overholtzer, du Département d’anthropologie, a également reçu un investissement de la FCI aujourd’hui pour la mise sur pied d’un laboratoire d’archéologie à McGill[ÉBM1] . Le laboratoire permettra de former des chercheurs en archéologie hautement qualifiés ainsi que les meilleurs étudiants aux cycles supérieurs et postdoctorants, en plus d’appuyer de nouvelles recherches au site archéologique de l’État de Tlaxcala, au centre du Mexique.
