Silvano De La Llata: Cities X Citizens – open planning and planning-in-situ as strategies to democratize public space planning

Friday, March 17, 2017 12:00to13:00
Macdonald Harrington Building 420, 815 rue Sherbrooke Ouest, Montreal, QC, H3A 0C2, CA

Public spaces are used by many – potentially by everyone in a city – but designed by very few. Thus, the democratization of the city is not only a question of citizen participation but also one of making urban design and planning processes more accessible to all of its potential users. Building on participatory design and community informatics, and drawing from the planning experiments taking place in the context of the square movements of 2011, this talk introduces open planning and planning-in-situ as methodologies to revitalize interstitial spaces through community engagement and participation.

This planning approach is the central topic of research, design and pedagogical project Cities X Citizens, and has been tested in two case studies in Montreal. This talk presents the results of these experiments, and investigates the challenges and potential of facilitating community processes to empower citizens to plan their own urban spaces.
