Denise Reid, Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, U of Toronto: Using Virtual Reality to Enable Participation and Occupational Engagement in Children with Cerebral Palsy

This paper will summarize some research using virtual reality with children who have cerebral palsy. The object of these investigations was to primarily provide an opportunity for engagement in virtual occupations. Outcomes measured were self-efficacy, postural control, and upper-extremity movement. A model of virtual reality and the person-environment experience was developed highlighting how concepts of centralization, entexturement, and environmental personalization were manifested in our research participants. Results of a qualitative study provides the perspectives of children who participate in virtual reality play based intervention. Virtual reality is viewed as offering a viable option to supplement the rehabilitation of these children.
