The Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL) is very pleased to invite you to an afternoon of panels on current sustainable development and law research, followed by the launch of new CISDL publications & a reception.

14:15 – 15:30 Panel Discussion on Legal Aspects of Implementing the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety
This panel will mark the launch of "Legal Aspects of Implementating the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety" (CUP, 2013), the first book in a new series focused on treaty implementation for sustainable development. Panelists will examine key legal aspects of implementing the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety at national and international levels. They will discuss current legal and political academic debates on biosafety that affect the design of national and international law on biosafety, and recent progress in the development of domestic regulatory regimes for biosafety. Discussion will also touch on legal, political, economic, and practical challenges and solutions around recent efforts to develop and implement domestic biosafety regulations, with a focus on developing countries.

15h45 – 17h00 Panel Discussion on International Criminal Justice, Sustainable Development, and Treaty Implementation
This panel will mark the launch of "International Criminal Justice, Sustainable Development, and Treaty Implementation" (CUP, 2013), which provides a serious and timely perspective on how the implementation of international criminal law can protect the interests of future generations. Panelists will discuss the potential and limitations of international criminalisation as a means for protecting the basic foundations of sustainable development; the role of existing international crimes in penalising serious forms of economic, social, environmental, and cultural harm; the indirect linkages that have developed between sustainable development and various mechanisms of criminal accountability and redress; and innovative proposals to broaden the scope of international criminal justice.
