The McGill Department of English Drama and Theatre Program is proud to announce its upcoming production of Caryl Churchill’s Cloud 9, appearing in the English Department’s Moyse Hall beginning November 21-23, and continuing November 28-30, 2013.

At its core Cloud 9 is a play about desire. Therefore, there is no better place for the first act to begin than in Victorian era Africa, where characters are caught in a catastrophic internal struggle between their own desires and the fierce restraints of colonial British society. The second act erupts out of these unbearable tensions, as we are brought into punk-rock-infused 1970s London. Here, the characters (only 25 years older) push the limits of their desires, as impossibility suddenly becomes possibility, and as self-denial becomes self-indulgence.

In collaboration with the Costuming for Theatre and Stage Scenery and Lighting courses, Professor Myrna Wyatt Selkirk and assistant Michele Robinson direct an immensely compelling (and, dare we say, arousing) journey through the repression, the confession and the liberation of desire.

The McGill University Department of English Drama & Theatre Program is dedicated to providing students with practical theatrical experience. Costume Design by the Costuming Class under the tutelage of Catherine Bradley, Technical and Production elements by the Stage Scenery and Lighting class under the supervision of Keith Roche and Corinne Deeley.
