Democratic deficits in Europe: National or supranational?

Philippe Schmitter, European University Institute, Florence. Prof. Schmitter's earlier work was on regional integration, interest intermediation, corporatism and transitions from authoritarian rule, especially in Latin America. More recently, he has been interested in conceptualizing democracy in the case of the European Union ("How to Democratize the European Union – and why bother," 2000) and in reassessing neo-functionalist theory ("Neo-neofunctionalism" in A. Weiner & T. Diez, European Integration Theory, Oxford, 2004).
