THE CUNDILL PRIZE LECTURE IN HISTORY AT MCGILL PRESENTS

A LECTURE BY DIARMAID MACCULLOCH

Christianity and Islam: Way-Stations on a Journey

Winner of the Cundill Prize in 2010 for his book “A History of Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years”

Diarmaid MacCulloch considers the relationship between two great religions of the Middle East over 1400 years and finds it engagingly complicated. Neither religion has ever had a single identity, and it is therefore foolish to see the relationship in terms of ‘a clash of civilisations’. There has been a history of borrowing in both directions, in terms of ideas and practices, between Christianity and Islam, and we need to explore that history in order to understand and manage present difficulties.

Diarmaid MacCulloch is a fellow of St Cross College, Oxford, a Fellow of the British Academy and professor of the History of the Church at Oxford University.
