Alumni Association of Washington presents: "McGill on the Move: Lecture with Margaret Somerville"
The McGill Alumni Association of Washington, DC extends a
cordial invitation to graduates, family and friends to attend a
lecture and reception with Margaret Somerville, DCL’78, Professor,
Faculty of Law and Faculty of Medicine, McGill University.
"Bird on an Ethics Wire: Searching for Common Ground"
When people of different backgrounds and viewpoints come
together, how can they find shared values on which to build an
ethical community? This question rests at the heart of Professor
Margaret Somerville’s research. Her articulate and forthright
approach to complex social problems has made her one of the world’s
most recognizable ethicists. Now she’s turning her sights toward
universities where, she believes, a plague of political correctness
has descended, threatening our ability to honestly and respectfully
discuss controversial issues. Please join this world-renowned
scholar as she explores how we can find common values to unite our
increasingly multicultural societies.
Margaret Somerville is a professor in both the Faculty of Law -
where she holds the Samuel Gale Chair - and the Faculty of
Medicine. In addition, she was the founding director of the McGill
Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law. She continues to be active in
the global development of bioethics and in the study of the wider
legal and ethical aspects of medicine and science. She is widely
published and has been an invited speaker at numerous international
conferences on ethical and legal aspects of science and society. In
2004, she was named the first recipient of the UNESCO Avicenna
Prize for Ethics in Science and delivered the CBC’s 2006 Massey
Lectures. She is also a regular contributor to all forms of
media.
