Recent skirmishes in Canadian higher education over academic
freedom have sparked a conversation at McGill about what academic
freedom should mean today. Meanwhile, ongoing public debates about
the post-secondary educational system and the global university
have raised questions about institutional autonomy and shared
governance.
How can academic freedom be protected in the face of budgetary
pressures? What are universities’ responsibilities to citizens,
