Indigenous Knowledge Holder Series 2018

Published: 16 March 2018

For the Indigenous Knowledge Holder Series, the Indigenous Studies Program invites an Indigenous Knowledge Holder to spend a week at the university to share their scholarship, work, and advocacy.  Indigenous Knowledge Holders – whether they be wampum belt holders, storytellers, artists, activists, hereditary leaders, or academics– encompass generations of knowledge embedded within the cultural and epistemological worldview of Indigenous communities that span generations, to enrich the McGill Community. This Series seeks to act as a bridge between that knowledge and the institution while placing an emphasis on Indigenous community collaborations and partnerships through academic events, workshops, and community presentations.

This year the Indigenous Knowledge Holder is Ryan McMahon! Ryan is Anishinaabe from Fort Frances, Ontario. He is incredibly multi-talented in the arts. Armed with a degree in Theatre & as a graduate of the prestigious Second City Conservatory (Toronto), Ryan’s comedic storytelling style is fast paced, loose & irreverent as he explores the good, the bad & the ugly between Indian Country & the mainstream. In addition to his comedic accolades, Ryan runs Indian & Cowboy (a member supported Indigenous media platform) and Makoons Media Group which creates digital projects that make space for Indigenous voices to disrupt, inspire, & transform the world around us. His wit and insight bring new light to all the subjects he interacts with.

Ryan will be giving a workshop to Indigenous students at McGill on Tuesday. Wednesday he'll be giving workshops with students at the Kahnawake Survival School during the day, then returning to McGill to give his keynote: "iPhones, Bush Tea and Dibajimowinan - Centering Indigenous Stories As A Pathway Forward Toward 2167". Thursday: you'll find him presenting the film Colonization Rd and participating in a Q&A. Friday: he'll be performing a Night of Comedy. Finally, on Saturday he'll be participating in the Indigenous Student Alliance celebrates of Indigenous Arts: Urban Voices.

Stay tuned to our Facebook page and Twitter! It's going to be a busy week.
