Eight McGill Law Students and Recent Alumni to Clerk at Supreme Court of Canada

Published: 12 March 2018

Eight BCL/LLB students, LLM candidates and recent graduates of McGill’s Faculty of Law were tapped to serve as law clerks to justices of the Supreme Court of Canada in 2019-2020. They are:

  • Patrick Baud : Justice Karakatsanis
  • Laura Cardenas : Justice Martin
  • Sajeda Hedaraly : Justice Gascon
  • Etienne Lacombe : Chief Justice Wagner
  • Emma Loignon-Giroux : Justice Côté
  • David Matyas : Justice Abella
  • Florence Paré : Justice Martin
  • Suzanne Zaccour : Justice Gascon

"As always, we’re very proud that students from McGill were chosen to contribute to the work of the Court," said Professor Johanne Poirier, this year's Faculty coordinator for the Supreme Court clerkships. “The Faculty’s integrated program that combines several legal traditions, as well as its bilingualism, prepares our alumni well for the many facets of the work that awaits them at the SCC.” Law clerks research points of law, prepare memoranda to help judges prepare for hearings and writing decisions, and generally assist with the work of the Court.

Law students, LLM candidates and young graduates from across Canada apply for the prestigious clerkships. Over the last 10 years, one in five Supreme Court clerks has been a student or recent graduate of the Faculty.

The Faculty also congratulates Miriam Clouthier, BCL/LLB’15, who was hired by newly appointed Supreme Court Justice Sheilah Martin, BCL’81, LLB’81, for a six-month contract ending in August 2018.

Congratulations to our newest cohort!
