Canadian Brass at the Schulich School of Music: 5 masterclasses and 2 concerts in 2 days!

Published: 7 November 2017

Through the Catherine Thornhill Steele Visiting Artist fund, the Schulich School of Music will have the great pleasure to welcome the renowned Canadian Brass on November 13-14, as a part of Brass Days. Stéphane Lemelin, Chair of the Department of Performance, comments: “We are thrilled to welcome the legendary Canadian Brass to the Schulich School of Music. Their presence on campus will be a tremendous source of inspiration for our students. The Canadian Brass is synonymous with the highest level of artistry among brass ensembles, and we are proud that former members of the Brass have included several Schulich alumni. Our aim is to maintain and further enhance Schulich’s long tradition of excellence in brass playing and we are delighted to connect with the Canadian Brass’ outreach initiative in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary.”

Named “one of the most popular brass ensembles in the world” by the Washington Post, the Canadian Brass has a long and rich history dating back to the 1970s. Their discography of over 130 albums from every imaginable genre has reached success around the world, and they frequently tour and perform in sold out venues. Their fun and quirky performances have made them pioneers in the distribution of brass music to diverse audiences, from casual listeners to musical connoisseurs.

Not only accomplished musicians, the members of the Canadian Brass (Caleb Hudson, Chris Coletti, Bernhard Scully, Achilles Liarmakopoulos and Chuck Daellenbach) are champions of music education. Their partnership with El Sistema, the renowned music education program in Venezuela, clearly shows their dedication and support of grassroots programs. Commenting on their upcoming concert at the Schulich School of Music, the Canadian Brass writes, "We have had so many excellent connections with the McGill music school over the years, we are really looking forward to our FIRST official relationship with all of you — finally!"

Performing brass standards and many of their own original arrangements, the Canadian Brass' repertoire covers the entirety of the Western musical canon. They have revolutionized brass music, turning their ensemble into one without barriers in the selection of their material.
