Outreach Session: Industrial Partnerships/Internships

Date: Friday, January 25, 2013

Time: 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Location: Strathcona Anatomy and Dentistry Building, Room M-1, 3640 University St

The Office of Sponsored Research and Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies are pleased to invite faculty members and graduate students to an outreach session focusing on programs offering financial assistance to students interested in undertaking research through a university-business partnership. This session would also benefit faculty members as these programs can lead to new connections with Canadian companies, increased funding and unique training opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows through applied, industrial research projects.

McGill will host three agency representatives who will present their industry internship programs and provide helpful tips on how to mix and match these programs. They will also provide details on projects that have successfully used these programs to the advantage of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and researchers.

Speakers:

  • Annik Brosseau, Program Officer - FRQNT
  • Jesse Vincent-Herscovici, Director, Strategic Accounts and Business Development, Mitacs
  • François Santerre, Research and Innovation Development Officer – NSERC

Discussion will center on, but not be limited to, the following programs:

BMP Innovation: Industrial Innovation Scholarships Program

The objective of the Industrial Innovation Scholarships Program is to foster the development of innovative capacity in companies and to improve employment prospects for recent graduates of master's and doctoral programs through university-industry partnerships. This program is offered jointly by NSERC and the FRQNT.

Mitacs Accelerate

Through the Mitacs-Accelerate program, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows apply their specialized expertise to business-related research challenges. Interns (graduate students or postdoctoral fellows) bring new perspectives to the problems faced by the industry partners by spending approximately half of their time on-site with industry and the remainder at the university advancing their research under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. This program is open to all disciplines and all industrial sectors, and projects can span a wide range of areas, including manufacturing, technical innovation, business processes, IT, social sciences, design, and more. This program is offered jointly by Mitacs and the FRQNT.

NSERC Engage and Industrial R&D Fellowships

Engage Grants are intended to foster the development of new research partnerships between researchers and companies that have never collaborated before by supporting a short-term R&D project. These projects usually involve graduate students and fellows, and are great opportunities for them to create long term research relationships with companies and/or potential employers. If the latter comes to fruition, then industrial R&D fellowships could be appropriate, as they provide important financial support to recent PhD graduates seeking careers in the Canadian private sector.

*Refreshments will be served.*
