VPN update: Cisco AnyConnect client update to version 4.2, October 26, 2016

On Wednesday, October 26, 2016 there will be an update to the Cisco AnyConnect application, used to connect to McGill’s Virtual Private Network.

This update is a maintenance release that includes enhancements and resolves some known issues with the earlier version.

Windows and Linux:
For Windows and Linux users, the new version, v4.2, will be automatically installed when you attempt to connect to securevpn.mcgill.ca.

VPN users: Update Cisco AnyConnect client to version 4.1 by March 31

After March 31, 2016 there will be a change on the Virtual Private Network, which will require version 4.1 or higher of the Cisco AnyConnect client software on Windows, Mac OS v10.8 and higher, and mobile devices. For those using Mac OS v10.7 or earlier, please contact the IT Service Desk; you will need to use the L2TP over IPSec security protocol.

VPN maintenance downtime - Tuesday morning, November 11, 7am

A maintenance operation will be performed on the VPN server for securevpn.mcgill.ca on Tuesday, November 11, 2014, from 7:00 to 7:15 am.  During this period, there will be a 5-minute downtime for VPN access. Any VPN connections in process at that time will be disconnected.

Switch to the new VPN before November 12

If you have not already made the switch to McGill’s new, more secure Virtual Private Network (VPN), time is running out. The old VPN, inside.mcgill.ca, will be deactivated on November 12. To avoid losing access to internal McGill systems and resources when off campus, set up a new VPN connection today.

McGill has a new, more secure VPN

McGill IT Services has introduced a new Virtual Private Network (VPN) to allow McGill faculty, staff and students access to internal McGill systems and resources from outside the McGill network.  This VPN, securevpn.mcgill.ca, uses the more secure SSL protocol and replaces inside.mcgill.ca, which uses the "Point-to-Point Tunneling" protocol.

VPN maintenance - Tuesday, Nov 19

There will be a brief 10 to 15 minute interruption of VPN service on Tuesday, November 19 starting at 7:00 am.

  • If you have already established a VPN connection before the maintenance begins, you should remain connected.
  • However, you will not be able to start a VPN session during the maintenance period.
