Peter Carpenter, head coach of the McGill swim team and McGill graduate Mike Babcock, bench boss of the Detroit Red Wings, are among 43 individuals who have been selected to receive a 2010 Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award, given annually to recognize coaches whose athletes have excelled at world championships and/or the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Valerie Grand'Maison of Fleurimont, Que., won gold, silver and bronze medals as McGill placed third of five teams in women's division of the first Quebec Cup swim meet of the season, Friday. On the men's side, Steven Bielby of Pointe Claire, Que., scored three silvers as the Redmen also finished third.

Steven Bielby of Pointe Claire, Que., a 21-year-old electrical engineering honours student with the McGill University men's swim team, has been named as one of the 2010 Desjardins CIS Top Eight Academic All-Canadians.
