Some three years after the first U.S. MOOC was launched to great fanfare, massive open online courses are becoming part of the higher-ed mainstream. Some of the largest Canadian universities are expanding their course offerings and applying the lessons they learn to the benefit of paying, on-campus students.
McGill’s initial experiment with Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs, has been a success and the first offering, Food for Thought, will be repeated next year.
"Food for Thought" launches at exactly noon today! At 12:00 you can log on and watch the first lecture. The course is totally free but you have to register. We now have over 20,000 students registered in 150 countries.
What is it like to teach a class of more than 20,000 students? I don’t know, but I’m about to find out. Colleagues David Harpp and Ariel Fenster and I have been selected to offer McGill’s first “massive open online course,” known in the trade as a MOOC.
