Redmen grad to receive second military decoration from Governor General

MONTREAL - Maj. Derek Prohar, a former McGill football and hockey player from Avonlea, Sask., is among 44 soldiers who will be awarded a Meritorious Service Medal. The announcement was made by David Johnston, the governor general of Canada, last week.

Clint Uttley has been appointed head coach of the McGill University football team. The 38-year-old native of Orillia, Ont., who is the 20th bench boss in school history, had handled the team on an interim basis for the final three games of the recently completed season after Sonny Wolfe stepped down last month.

McGill football player wins Quebec nomination for Russ Jackson Trophy

Austin Anderson, a place-kicker with the McGill University Redmen, is the 2011 RSEQ football conference nominee for the Russ Jackson trophy, which goes to the player who best combines academics with athletics and citizenship. He becomes the 12th McGill candidate in 26 years to win the Quebec nomination.

Carabins conquer Redmen in CIS football opener

Felix Prevost of Laval, Que., hauled in five passes for 96 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the No.7-ranked Montreal Carabins defeated McGill 24-13 in the CIS football season opener, Thursday, before a capacity crowd of 5,160 at CEPSUM Stadium. The Montreal victory spoiled an impressive university debut for McGill quarterback Dallon Kuprowski, an 18-year-old freshman from Ottawa.

Gaiters rally as Redmen lead evaporates with 23 ticks left on clock

A 15-yard catch by Shantino Wilson of Brampton, Ont., with 23 seconds left gave the Bishop's Gaiters a come-from-behind victory, 21-18, over the McGill Redmen in CIS football action on Saturday afternoon at Coulter Field. Wilson's touchdown, the first of his career, was the culmination of a 10-play, 68-yard drive over 1:37, as the Gaiters completed a comeback from an 11-0 halftime deficit.
