This week marks the 138th anniversary of the historic McGill-Harvard rugby-football confrontation. The two-game series, played at Cambridge, Mass., May 14 and 15, 1874, were the first formal games of North American-style football.

McGill swimmer Steven Bielby of Pointe Claire, Que., hauled in four awards totaling $4,000 and the hockey Martlets were named Quebec women's team of the year at the 24th annual Quebec Foundation for University Athletics gala, held at the Mortagne hotel in Boucherville, Tuesday. McGill ranked third among all institutions with a combined 11 bursary recipients for $25,500.

The McGill University football schedule has been finalized for the team's 132nd season this fall. The Redmen, which will feature 75 returnees under head coach Clint Uttley, opens with a pre-season game against Queen's in Kingston on Aug. 26, renewing a long-standing rivalry which dates back to 1884.
