This Reading Week, a group of students from the faculties of Management, Arts, Education, and Engineering will travel to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and Seoul, South Korea to experience business within rapidly emerging markets. Their journey, the sixth Hot Cities of the World Tour, will be led by Desautels Professor Karl Moore.
A McGill management professor is leading students on a business field trip that will give them global experience.
Called the ‘Hot Cities’ tour, professor Karl Moore is taking students to emerging and developing countries to more about other economies.
... “I've never been to Asia and I've always wanted to explore Asia,” said student Joseph Polossifakis. “I know it’s an up-and-coming region.”
The McGill Cancer Auction Committee, co-chaired by Rosalie Lesser & Lindsay Lubov, had a record-breaking year after its event on Friday, raising close to $30,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. This year's auction items included flight tickets, spa gift certificates and Igloofest passes.
The McGill delegation to the Financial Open Case Competition won a podium in four of the six disciplines, placing the school third overall.
5 Days for the Homeless is a Canadian student run charity campaign during which students collect money for a local charity supporting homeless youth by experiencing the homeless life for 5 days.
The event takes place in March. Students live as homeless for 5 days; they sleep outside on campus for 5 nights, rely on food donations, have no access to showers nor their apartment but must still attend classes.
5 Days for the Homeless helps students realise how hard being homeless really is by experiencing their life for a mere 5 days.
Starting in Fall 2014, students in the Faculty of Management will be able to major in Strategic Management.
... “Social Business is a type of company that runs just as a normal business—selling a product, earning revenue—but whose ultimate goal is to solve a social problem as opposed to maximizing profit, like many companies aim to do,” explained Joanna Klimczak, U3 Management, one of the two students who started the project.
More than 40 students and alumni from the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University are visiting Mongolia this March, to help them understand the realities of doing business in a fledgling emerging market.

Most professors exhaust themselves trying to get their students off of social media. Andy Nulman (BCom'83), however, has designed his entire class around being on it.
In what’s believed to be the first syllabus of its kind, McGill University’s marketing and society class uses YouTube’s Creator Playbook as its sole course book. And, in lieu of a final exam, students will be evaluated on their launch of a unique channel on the video-sharing site.
BCom students Nicholas Bigelow, Ivan Di, Mak Dorić, and Emily Ren have triumphed over 250 teams from across North America to win the 2014 National Investment Banking Competition (NIBC) held in Vancouver from January 7-9.
