The McGill Institute for the Study of Canada’s upcoming conference “Lifting off and Flying High” focuses on cultivating talent and success in this country in the fields of culture, high-tech, and athletics.

But one of the panelists, Westmount resident and former Olympian Dick Pound (BCom’62), knows that in sports where milliseconds separate first and second place, the drive for success at all costs can be a destructive force.

Careers are a lot longer than people think. Most of my undergrad and MBA students are in a great rush to get on with it. And they should but they need to take the long view. I recently interviewed OgilvyOne’s CEO Brian Fetherstonhaugh (BCom’79) who is one of the smartest people I know. Brian separates a career into three sections, allowing for some perspective and an eye on the future.

Calgarian takes first steps on quest to end human trafficking

On Nov. 3, 22-year-old Samantha McManus (BCom’12) took her first steps toward combating the inhumanity of human trafficking. She, along with 22 other walkers representing 12 countries around the world, began a 15-day trek from Bangkok, Thailand, to the Myanmar border in support of the Freedom to Walk initiative. The campaign raises both awareness for human trafficking issues and funds to assist those men, women and children whose lives have been affected by the atrocities of forced labour and sex.

Mark Beaudet: Stepping into the breach in the CEO’s absence

In August, 2011, Paladin Labs Inc. founder and CEO Jonathan Goodman was involved in a terrible bicycle accident and had to relinquish his job to recover. His position running the Montreal-based drug distributor was taken over by long-time colleague, vice-president Mark Beaudet (BCom’90), who has now been interim CEO for almost a year-and-a-half. Mr. Beaudet has maintained Paladin’s remarkable growth in Canada – where it markets prescription and over-the-counter products usually licensed from other companies – and kept up the pace of international expansion.
