Jason Starr of Cote St. Luc, Que., has been appointed head coach and field manager of the McGill University men's baseball team. He becomes the third bench boss in team history, behind Johnny Elias (1994 to 1995) and Ernie D'Alessandro (1996 to 2011).
The Chicago Cubs have named former McGill University baseball player Shiraz Rehman of Blauvelt N.Y., as the club's assistant to the general manager. A 1999 graduate of McGill, he earned a bachelor's degree in commerce, majoring in finance and accounting and was a starting infielder on the Redmen baseball team for four years.
Marco Masciotra of Kirkland, Que., went 4-for-4 with one walk, a double and four runs batted in as Concordia blanked the defending national champion McGill Redmen 9-0 to win the rubber match of the CIBA North Division best-of-three semifinal series. The teams split a doubleheader on Saturday, with McGill winning the opener 9-3 and Concordia bouncing back to take the nightcap 5-2.
Freshman Chris Ames of Richmond, N.B., and Robert Garven, a senior from Saskatoon, each smacked home runs as McGill opened a best-of-three semifinal series with a resounding 9-3 victory over Concordia, Sunday. The Redmen lost the nightcap 5-2, however, forcing a rubber match on Thanksgiving Monday at noon for the right to advance to a berth at the CIBA Nationals in Moncton, N.B., Oct. 21-23.
