Newly created Jean Béliveau Award recognizes achievements and community leadership of McGill athletes
A new athletic financial award -- known as the Jean Béliveau Award -- has been established at McGill University to recognize outstanding student-athletes and honour the memory of the legendary Montreal Canadiens captain and inspirational community leader.
Maximilien Van Haaster (B.Ed. Kinesiology ’16), of our Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, is one of three McGill athletes representing Canada at the Summer Olympic Games in Rio, August 5th to 21st.
From Montreal, Quebec, Van Haaster won an individual bronze medal at the 2013 Pan American fencing Championships, and finished fifth in both individual and team foil events at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto.
Hamilton News' Ian Burns interviewed Faculty of Education student Dan Williams for a recent article about his success with McGill's lacrosse team. McGill's Redmen lacrosse team enjoyed an undefeated season in 2015. Currently studying for his B.Ed. in Secondary Education, Williams hails from Ancaster, Ontario, and served as captain of Team Ontario's men's lacrosse team. Hamilton News also spoke to McGill lacrosse coach Tim Murdoch.
Mélodie Daoust, captain of the McGill Martlets, has been named by Hockey Canada to play at the 2016 Nations Cup tournament in Füssen, Germany, Jan. 4-7.
The Canadian women’s development team will participate in the four-day competition along with national teams from Finland, Germany, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.

With a new name and logo, new uniforms, and new promotional links to hockey’s most storied franchise, expectations are high for the rebranded Les Canadiennes de Montréal this season.

Twenty teams of Lumberjacks and Jills from eight universities in Eastern Canada and the United States will test their mettle at the 55th annual Intercollegiate Woodsmen Competition, Saturday January 24 at McGill’s Macdonald Campus in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue.
Wood chips will fly as over 100 competitors vie for individual, doubles and team honours in traditional woodsmen events that include axe throwing, log rolling, pole climbing, water boil, snowshoe race and more. The events are a showcase of Canada’s rich history in forestry as celebrated by a whole new generation of lumberjacks.
