Guy Boucher takes after his father, just as Guy Boucher’s son is a lot like him. Wilfrid Boucher wasn’t just a mathematician but he was brilliant at math, so he studied to be an actuary in a Quebec college run by the priests where if you failed any single year, you were out. Wilfrid Boucher didn’t fail. And when Boucher’s time for higher education came, he didn’t fail, either.

Three McGillians to play for Canada at IIHF world championship

Charline Labonté of the McGill University women's hockey team and two other graduates from the Martlets program are among 21 players named to represent Canada at the 2011 IIHF world hockey championship tournament, scheduled for April 16-25 in Zurich and Winterthur, Switzerland. The team was picked following a four-day selection camp at the MasterCard Centre in Toronto which concluded on Tuesday.

McGill grad Darche nominated for NHL's Masterton trophy

After a decade of bouncing around the minor leagues, McGill grad Mathieu Darche is enjoying a career season with the Canadiens, which is one reason why the Montreal chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association has nominated him for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The trophy is awarded annually by the PHWA to a player who exhibits perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Hockey players Alexandre Picard-Hooper of Boucherville, Que., and Cathy Chartrand, a defenceman from Lac Nominingue, Que., were named male and female athletes of the year, respectively, at the 34th annual McGill intercollegiate sports awards gala held at the Love Competition Hall, inside the Currie Gym, Thursday.

Redmen grad Routhier resigns as president of Montreal Juniors

Martin Routhier says he will now have time to take in a Montreal Juniors game as a fan. The McGill grad and former Redmen team captain stepped down as president of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team Thursday, ending weeks of speculation he was moving on.

Habs Darche to drop puck at Redmen-Ottawa game on Friday

Montreal Canadiens forward Mathieu Darche has been invited by his alma mater to perform the ceremonial faceoff at Friday's university hockey game between the Ottawa Gee-Gees and the McGill Redmen at McConnell Arena (3883 University Street). The game is slated to start at 7 p.m. and will be webcast on the Streaming Sports Network (www.ssncanada.ca).
