Super science documentary film - "March of the Penguins" (2005, Luc Jacquet)

Sun, 2008-01-13 16:00
Redpath Museum : 859 rue Sherbrooke Ouest Montreal Quebec Canada , H3A 0C4

Narrated by Morgan Freeman, this film depicts the yearly journeys of the Emperor penguins of Antarctica. In autumn, all the penguins of breeding age (five years old and over) leave the ocean, their normal habitat, to walk inland to their ancestral breeding grounds. There, the penguins participate in a courtship that, if successful, results in the hatching of a chick. For the chick to survive, both parents must make multiple arduous journeys between the ocean and the breeding grounds over the ensuing months. It took one year to shoot the movie, which was filmed around the French scientific base of Dumont d'Urville in Adélie Land.

Super science documentary film - "What the Bleep Do We Know?!"

Sun, 2008-01-20 16:00
Redpath Museum : 859 rue Sherbrooke Ouest Montreal Quebec Canada , H3A 0C4

A controversial film that combines documentary interviews and a fictional narrative to posit a connection between science and spirituality while exploring topics such as neurology, quantum physics, psychology, epistemology, ontology, metaphysics, magical thinking and spirituality. The film features interviews with individuals presented as experts in science and spirituality, interspersed with the story of a deaf photographer as she struggles with her situation. The film has received widespread criticism from the scientific community. Physicists, in particular, claim that the film grossly misrepresents the meaning of various principles of quantum mechanics and is, in fact, pseudoscience.

As his farmers strive to harvest some of the highest quality coffee beans on the international market, Tadesse travels the world in an attempt to find buyers willing to pay a fair price.

Super science documentary film - "So Much So Fast" (Steven Ascher and Jeanne Jordan, 2006)

Redpath Museum : 859 rue Sherbrooke Ouest Montreal Quebec Canada , H3A 0C4

What would you do if you were 29 and found you might only have a few years to live? "So Much So Fast" is about the remarkable events set in motion when Stephen Heywood discovered he had the paralyzing neural disorder ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Made over five years, this film tracks one family's ferocious response to an orphan disease: the kind drug companies ignore because there's not enough profit in curing it. In reaction, and with no medical background, Stephen's brother Jamie creates a research group and in two years builds it from three people in a basement to a multimillion-dollar ALS mouse facility. Finding a drug in time becomes Jamie's all-consuming obsession.

The most infuriating documentary of the year didn't open in theatres, so there were no Oscars for Spike Lee's outstanding 4 1/2 hour film about Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. An absolutely essential document to understanding what happened to New Orleans.
