Dynamic polyglot wins the 2014 McGill Associates Prize in Translation

Montreal, August 2014 –

According to constructivists, translator competence comes in many shapes and sizes but is not limited to language competence alone.  Much depends on life experiences and the ability to build progressively on these.  Such is the case for Smadar Brandes, the 2014 winner of the McGill Associates Prize in Translation (French-English), which is awarded annually to the student with the best academic record in the Certificate in Translation.

Professor Andrea Bjorkland, the L. Yves Fortier Chair in International Arbitration and International Commercial Law, was delighted to receive more than 80 submissions from scholars and junior practitioners affiliated with more than 50 institutions for the 2014 Nappert Prize in International Arbitration. Authors hailed from around the world, with every continent save Antarctica represented.

The work presented in this thesis is the step by step approach taken in the effort of developing radio frequency (RF) heating technology for the extraction of apple peel phenolic compounds. The work that has been carried out covers the design of an extraction system, the establishment of the initial extraction conditions, characterization of suitable solvents for the extraction system, process optimization and justification study.
