The idea of an anthropology of Christianity: On the work of Talad Asad

Mon, 2007-11-05 13:00 - 14:30
Arts Building : 853 rue Sherbrooke Ouest Montreal Quebec Canada , H3A 0G5

Gil Anidjar, Dept of Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures (MEALAC), Columbia University. What does it mean to refer to an individual, a period or an area as "religious"? What work -- overt or covert -- does the word "religion" do in its historical and contemporary usage? Focusing on knowledge, sensibilities and power, Talal Asad has offered a consistent and scrutinizing exploration of the uses and abuses of the concept of religion. Attempting to retrace his steps, this paper will argue that Asad's work has major consequences for an understanding of the concept, if it is one, of "Christianity" and, by extension, "Islam." Gil Anidjar is author of "The Jew, the Arab: A History of the Enemy" (Stanford University Press, 2003) and "Semites: Race, Religion, Literature" (Stanford U. Press, pub. date October 15, 2007).

Macdonald Campus - 2007 Remembrance Day ceremony

Thu, 2007-11-08 10:30
Raymond Building : 21111 Lakeshore Road St Anne de Bellevue Quebec Canada , H9X 3V9

The community is invited to this ceremony at the War Memorial in front of the Raymond Building. During the ceremony, the campus community -- Macdonald, John Abbott College and Macdonald High School -- will commemorate the men and women who have served our country in times of war, military conflict and peace. We are especially privileged to be able to thank, in person, some very special people with whom we share our lovely campus; our guests will include a sizeable contingent of veterans from the Ste. Anne's veterans hospital, this year celebrating its 90th anniversary. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to join the Macdonald procession, which will commence at 10:15 at the Raymond Building entrance, loop through the complex to the Macdonald-Stewart Building entrance, proceed down to the Centennial Centre and finally over to the front of Laird Hall, where it will join the procession coming from John Abbott College. Both processions will then move on to the Memorial.

The Bronze Horseman, Saint-Petersburg, and Translation in Eighteenth-Century Russia

Thu, 2007-11-15 16:30
Sherbrooke 688 : 688 rue Sherbrooke Ouest Montreal Quebec Canada , H3A 3R1

Guest speaker: Sergey Tyulenev. Clifford Geertz wrote that ideological metaphors are symbolic maps. The statue of Peter the Great, the Bronze Horseman, the city of Saint-Petersburg, "Peter’s Creation" (Pushkin) are such metaphor-maps of major social reforms carried out through translation: therefore translation constitutes yet another dimension of these maps.
