There's also alarming news about genetic modification and food additives such as aspartame and MSG. Using brain imaging, Dr. Catherine Bushnell has been looking into the activity of the brains of patients who are distracted from their pain and has discovered that drawing less attention to one's pain may end up being even more helpful than many opiates or other pain medications. This lecture will demonstrate how both attentional and emotional states alter pain perception and pain processing in the brain.

What linguistic features divide English Canadians along regional lines? Professor Charles Boberg has been conducting research into these questions at McGill for several years and is currently writing a book on the subject. He'll discuss the latest findings of his research on variation and change in Canadian English, with a special emphasis on the role of Canadian English in sustaining Canadian cultural identity.

Senior Archivist Gordon Burr will show you some of the related treasures of the University Archives: photos, clothing, posters and more. Burr's collection includes a white wool women's jacket with red trim from the '40s, a '20s white-striped green dress from the Macdonald College School of Household Sciences and a hip 1970s nod to the book classification system, "Dewey or don't we" library school tee.
