Join us for a McGill School of Information Studies (SIS) Seminar Series talk on the challenges of computational privacy in the age of big data with guest speaker Dr. Reza Shokri, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Information Security, Department of Computer Science, ETH Zurich.
Lisa Cohen, Assistant professor, Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University, Canada, reveals the difficulty women encounter in being hired for higher level roles.
When Mary Barra became the first female chief executive of General Motors, we celebrated a woman reaching the height of her profession.

A growing number of people are interested in investing in companies that perform well environmentally as well as economically. Unfortunately, measuring environmental performance is not as straightforward as calculating a simple financial return on investment. Developing a yardstick for environmental performance is inherently fraught, forcing evaluators to reduce all of the complex dimensions of sustainability, greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, biodiversity impacts and other factors into a single value.
A McGill management professor is leading students on a business field trip that will give them global experience.
Called the ‘Hot Cities’ tour, professor Karl Moore is taking students to emerging and developing countries to more about other economies.
... “I've never been to Asia and I've always wanted to explore Asia,” said student Joseph Polossifakis. “I know it’s an up-and-coming region.”

During the February 19, 2014 session, the parties continued to discuss the justification of incidental illnesses. The university indicated its position concerning the union’s February 5 proposal on the length of absence requiring justification.
PhD defence of Mr. Ali Salehiomran -- A Universal Approach to Single Longitudinal Mode Operation in Fiber Lasers
It is well-known that fiber ring lasers (FRLs) suffer from multiple longitudinal mode (MLM) operation due to their cavity length. Although the average optical output power from an MLM FRL may remain constant, the optical power distribution among the longitudinal modes fluctuates. As a result, the output signal of an MLM FRL is degraded by intensity fluctuations, mode competition, and mode hopping. Therefore, it is desirable to force FRLs to operate in single longitudinal mode (SLM) condition.
Ph.D. Defense of Mr. Alaa Al-Kadry -- Mid-Infrared Soliton Self-Frequency Shift and Supercontinuum Sources Based on As2Se3 Chalcogenide Microwires
In this thesis, we propose tunable mid-Infrared (IR) sources based on the soliton self frequency shift (SSFS) and supercontinuum (SC) generation in As2Se3 microwires. First, we present two methods to maximize the SSFS in microwires with diameter profiles varying non-uniformly along the soliton propagation path. There are two steps in each method. The first step consists in selecting the input microwire diameter that leads to the highest rate of soliton frequency shift per unit length.
