Management Students Learn from Businesses Born Out of Poverty

A group of executive students from organizations around the world recently visited disadvantaged Indian districts to learn how micro-entrepreneurship is helping transform emerging economies. Witnessing the growth of entrepreneurship in underprivilidged areas first-hand, stduents on the International Masters in Practicing Management (IMPM) visited Myrada, a non-profit organization in Bangalore which helps people generate their own income.

C’est avec beaucoup d’émotions et d’ambitions que Cécile Branco-Côté et Bernard Darche étaient de retour à McGill la semaine dernière, eux qui avaient remporté la Coupe Dobson en juin 2014 avec leur projet de Centre Magnétique, un lieu favorisant la collaboration de la communauté entrepreneuriale de Lac-Mégantic.

A Brief History of Decision Making in Business

Sometime in the midst of the last century, Chester Barnard, a retired telephone executive and author of the Functions of the Executive, imported the term "decision making" from the lexicon of public administration in to the business world. There it began to replace narrower descriptors such as "resource allocation" and "policy making". ... So Barnard -- and such later theorists as James March, Herbert Simon and Henry Mintzberg -- laid the foundation for the study of managerial decision making.

La vérité est que je me sens moi-même expat à Toronto. Originaire de Montréal, je suis arrivée dans cette ville il y a 22 ans. Sans l'appui de nos familles, mon mari québécois et moi-même avons élevé une famille et compté sur nos nouvelles amitiés pour faire notre place. C'est avec une mentalité de touriste que j'ai commencé à explorer la ville avec mon bambin de 2 ans, lorsque j'ai quitté mon emploi à temps plein. Je travaillais alors pour TFO, à la promotion des émissions pour enfants. ...

Another view: The case for year-round Pell Grants
