James Der Derian, Watson Institute for International Studies, Brown University. From the "CNN effect" to the "YouTube effect," and as the production of terror becomes inextricable from the consumption of information, global media has become not only the transmitter but the trigger of international crises. James Der Derian is author of "On Diplomacy: A Genealogy of Western Estrangement" and "Antidiplomacy: Spies, Terror, Speed, and War", editor of "International Theory: Critical Investigations" and "The Virilio Reader", and co-editor of "International/Intertextual Relations: Postmodern Readings of World Politics". His articles on international relations have appeared in the "Review of International Studies" and "International Studies Quarterly," among others. His articles on war, technology and the media have appeared in the "New York Times," "Nation," "Washington Quarterly" and "Wired." John M. Coffin is American Cancer Society Professor and Distinguished Professor, Depts of Molecular Biology and Microbiology, Tufts University, Boston. He also serves as advisor on HIV and AIDS to the National Cancer Institute and to the HIV Drug Resistance Program (DRP), which he founded in 1997. He is well known for his work on retrovirus genetics, genome structure and evolution, and is author of nearly 200 publications. Dr. Coffin has also been an editor or editor-in-chief of many international leading journals including "Science," "Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences USA" and the "Journal of Virology"; he is senior editor of "Retroviruses," the definitive text on the subject. In 1999, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences USA, in recognition of his contributions to the field of retrovirology. See the website (below) for an abstract of his lecture.

Henri-Paul Normandin, BCL'81, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations. In his many years working in Asia and Africa with CIDA, and now at the UN in New York, Ambassador Normandin has had first-hand experience in the field of law and justice, both in the context of international development and peace operations. In addition to his work in poverty reduction, he was involved in numerous legal reform initiatives, the establishment of institutions such as human rights commissions, and the fight against impunity. He will share his thoughts on the links between the rule of law, international peace and development.
