Redpath Museum : 859 rue Sherbrooke Ouest Montreal Quebec Canada , H3A 0C4

A scalding view of how corporations get richer as African coffee growers get poorer. Multinational coffee companies dominate this industry worth over $80-billion, making coffee the most valuable trading commodity in the world after oil. But most of Africa's coffee farmers are being forced to abandon their coffee fields. Tadesse Meskela is one man on a mission to save his 74,000 struggling coffee farmers from bankruptcy. As his farmers strive to harvest some of the highest quality coffee beans on the international market, Tadesse travels the world in an attempt to find buyers willing to pay a fair price.

Super science documentary film - "So Much So Fast" (Steven Ascher and Jeanne Jordan, 2006)

Redpath Museum : 859 rue Sherbrooke Ouest Montreal Quebec Canada , H3A 0C4

What would you do if you were 29 and found you might only have a few years to live? "So Much So Fast" is about the remarkable events set in motion when Stephen Heywood discovered he had the paralyzing neural disorder ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Made over five years, this film tracks one family's ferocious response to an orphan disease: the kind drug companies ignore because there's not enough profit in curing it. In reaction, and with no medical background, Stephen's brother Jamie creates a research group and in two years builds it from three people in a basement to a multimillion-dollar ALS mouse facility. Finding a drug in time becomes Jamie's all-consuming obsession.

The most infuriating documentary of the year didn't open in theatres, so there were no Oscars for Spike Lee's outstanding 4 1/2 hour film about Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. An absolutely essential document to understanding what happened to New Orleans.

Super science documentary film - "Democracy 4 Dummies" (NFB, 2007)

Sun, 2008-03-30 16:00
Redpath Museum : 859 rue Sherbrooke Ouest Montreal Quebec Canada , H3A 0C4

Introduced by filmmaker Sophia Male, this satirical documentary shows aspiring politicians how average candidates run for public office, with little or no money. Its irreverent tone targets young people who are often too apathetic toward politics to vote, let alone run for office. Also present will be the film's star, Dylan Perceval-Maxwell, a long-time Green Party candidate and owner of a hemp store in Montreal's trendy Plateau neighbourhood. Dylan's opponent during his last election campaign, Bloc Québécois leader Gilles Duceppe, ultimately won the riding, but Dylan got the most votes of any Green Party candidate in the province.
