McGill rates first in Canada and 12th in world rankings

McGill University has been ranked among the world's top universities again this year by the prestigious Times Higher-QS World University Rankings. The THES/QS declared McGill the number one Canadian university by global standards and number 12 among the top 200 universities ranked -- up nearly 10 rankings from 21st in 2006. The ranking also classes McGill as North America's best public university and the only Canadian university ranked among the world's top 30.

From lab work to fieldwork, McGill's undergraduate students are taking learning beyond the classroom. Dentistry student Romina Perri was lead author of a paper analyzing the strategies used to gather participants in Professor Jocelyne Feine's study of dental implants.

Investigators at the Centre for Bone and Periodontal Research are decoding the mysteries of musculoskeletal disorders. Musculoskeletal conditions, such as arthritis and osteoporosis, are the most common causes of severe long-term pain and physical disability. Marc McKee, a professor in Dentistry and the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, and Dr. David Goltzman, Director of the Centre for Bone and Periodontal Research, are investigating the mechanisms of these diseases.

Howard Ross Library: delayed opening Saturday, November 24

The Bronfman Building, including the Howard Ross Library of Management, will be closed for important construction and water upgrades, starting Friday, November 23, 2007, at midnight, and will not reopen until Saturday noon at the earliest. We expect the Library to be open sometime after noon on Saturday. Library staff will be on hand to open the Library when the water is turned back on. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Dr. Ann Gamsa, director of psychological services at the MUHC Pain Centre, tells the Guelph Mercury (Nov. 2, 2007) that pain sufferers can learn to modify their pain by using a variety of mental strategies, including distraction, as a tool.

McGill Centre for Research on Pain named in honour of Alan Edwards

On Tuesday, November 13, 2007, Heather Munroe-Blum, Principal and Vice-Chancellor at McGill University, joined Catherine Bushnell, Director of the McGill Centre for Research on Pain, deans from the Faculties of Dentistry and Science and close friends and family at 740 Dr. Penfield to celebrate the launch of the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain. The Centre, now recognized as a world leader in the study and treatment of pain, is being named in honour of Mr. Alan Edwards in recognition of his steadfast commitment to pain research.

24-hour access begins Nov. 26 at Humanities and Social Sciences Library

The Redpath section of the Humanities and Social Sciences Library will be open for study 24 hours a day, 7 days a week starting at 12:45 a.m., Monday, November 26, and ending at 6:00 p.m., Friday, December 21. A valid McGill ID card is required for access to the Library after 00:45 a.m. The Redpath main floor, as well as the Info Café and the cafeteria, will remain open overnight during this period.

Dental research in rural India

Drs. Jocelyn Feine and Paul Allison of the McGill Faculty of Dentistry visited seven dental schools in India as part of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) to encourage research in medical care, including dental oral health.
