Richard L. & Sylvia R. Cruess

RICHARD L. CRUESS, MD, an Orthopedic Surgeon, received his BA from Princeton and his MD from Columbia University. He is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Core Faculty at the Centre for Medical Education at McGill University. He previously served as Chair of Orthopaedics at the Royal Victoria Hospital (1967-1981) and at McGill (1976-1981), and as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University (1981-1995). He was President of the Canadian Orthopedic Association (1978), the American Orthopedic Research Society (1980) and of the Association of Canadian Medical Colleges (1992-1995). Since 1995, he has been based at the Centre for Medical Education, carrying out research on medical professionalism with his wife, Dr. Sylvia Cruess. Together they have spoken on professionalism around the world and published extensively on its definition, its relationship to medicine’s social contract, and how to teach and evaluate it.

SYLVIA R. CRUESS received her BA from Vassar College B.A and her MD from Columbia University. An Endocrinologist, she is Professor of Medicine, and Core Faculty at the Centre for Medical Education at McGill University. She previously served as Director of the Metabolic Day Centre (1968-1978) and as Director of Professional Services of the Royal Victoria Hospital (1978-1995) in Montreal. She was active in accrediting health care facilities and was a member of the Deschamps Commission on the Conduct of Research on Humans in Establishments. Since 1995, she has been based at the Centre for Medical Education, carrying out research on medical professionalism with her husband, Dr. Richard Cruess. Together they have spoken on professionalism around the world and published extensively on its definition, its relationship to medicine's social contract, and how to teach and evaluate it.

Current research interests: Teaching and evaluating professionalism in the health professions, and medicine’s social contract with society.
