Mentoring Program

The Career Development Office, in collaboration with CaPS and Alumni Services, has established a Mentor Program. The program enables you to establish contacts with legal practitioners who provide valuable advice and guidance regarding careers and share professional experiences. Additionally, the Mentor Program can be a helpful step in establishing a professional network.

Program Description

The Mentor Program defines the mentoring relationship between McGill University alumni and the students as a partnership. Each participant has a role, and a joint investment is required in order to attain joint gains. The students and mentors themselves primarily make the program a success, and participation of both parties is voluntary. The relationship is very flexible, and it is up to the participants to set the time limitations. This program is not intended as a job placement service for students, but as a networking tool to provide students with useful information on careers and the labour market.

Benefits for students
  • Define career and other developmental objectives
  • Determine whether the career, area of practice, firm or organization being perused matches skills, interests and expectations
  • Receive tips and information about the job and guidance on professional image
  • Learn the art of networking and have an established network of contacts upon graduation
  • Research career trends and opportunities in your intended field or occupation
  • Enhance your potential for employability
  • Gain exposure to the workplace

Your Role

  • Complete an on-line Student Application Form (in CaPS Mentor Program section)
  • A minimal commitment of one semester
  • Respect the mentor's time and other commitments
  • Complete a yearly progress report, and submit it to the Mentoring Program Coordinator
  • Have email access, as this is the main form of communication.

If CaPS is unable to match the student with a mentor, students should contact the Career Development Office. For more information on how to become involved in the Mentor Program as a student or as a mentor, please visit www.caps.mcgill.ca/programs/mentor or email the Mentor Program Coordinator.
