ProNet

ProNet is a networking tool embedded in myFuture that is somewhat similar to Linkedin. It enables current McGill students and alumni (both undergraduates and graduates) to get in touch with more experienced students and recent alumni in order to get help with their search for an internship, job, grad school or career.

ProNet can help you if you are a student looking to:

  • Decide about your future career;
  • Find an internship to do during or after your studies;
  • Figure out what Law School or Medical School is really like;
  • Look for a job teaching English in Asia;
  • Know what to do with your degree;
  • Get into grad school;
  • Find a good tree-planting job for the summer.

To access ProNet, follow these steps:

  1. Log into myFuture.
  2. Click on "ProNet Helpers" tab found on your homepage. You will now be able to view a list of all available Career Helpers.
  3. Click on the "View" button next to the Career Helper profile to see additional information about the Career Helpers' academic and employment information.
  4. Click on the "Interested" button if you want to network with this Career Helper. You will now be able to view the Career Helper's contact information.

Important: Each student will only be able to show "Interest" in a maximum of two (2) Career Helpers, so choose carefully. Once you have selected someone whom you would like to network with, it will be YOUR responsibility to contact this person. The Career Helpers will be notified via email that you have shown interest in them once you have clicked on the "Interested" button. After you have finished working with your Career Helper, please click the "Mentoring Complete" button to ensure that your Career Helper will become available to help other students.

Some pointers to keep in mind:
  • Be inquisitive, respectful, polite and well-prepared.
  • Decide with your helper the best way to communicate - by phone, by email or face-to face.
  • You can ask for other contacts and job search information, but do not ask for a job from your helper. That is not their role.
  • When you have come to the end of your relationship with your helper, please go back into your Networking tab and "withdraw interest" so that the helper is freed up to help another student.

Want to become a Career Helper through ProNet?

  • Are you a recent McGill grad or student who feels that you could help a less experienced student find their way into a job, internship or graduate school?
  • Do you think you could help students make choices about their career no matter what year you're in?
  • Do you have tips you could share about how you got a particularly fun/interesting summer job, internship or a unique opportunity abroad?

If you answered yes to any of the above, consider offering your services as a Career Helper. To get involved, follow these simple steps:

  1. Sign in to myFuture.
  2. Click on the "Profile" tab on your homepage, followed by the "Professional Network" tab.
  3. Fill out the required information in your Professional Network (ProNet) Profile. You will be able to indicate the number of students you are willing to help. Once you fill out your profile, it will be visible to students when activated.

If/when a student is interested in getting career help from you, you will be notified, but it will be their responsibility to get in touch with you. You can work with this student via email, telephone or, at a face-to-face meeting - it's up to the two of you. How much time you dedicate to this program is also up to you - from just one email to many face-to-face meetings with several students over the year. If your schedule changes and you find yourself with less time, you can leave the ProNet (Professional Network) list at any point. Students will be told that you are there to answer their questions about jobs, internships, grad school or other career issues, not to find a job for them.
