You can volunteer on campus, in your neighbourhood or across the globe; with
children, seniors, new immigrants, local communities or endangered species;
for causes as varied as sustainable development, deaf education, social
justice, health and fitness, arts advocacy, animal rights, the fight against
cancer or world poverty. You can cook, write, teach yoga, share business
knowledge, mentor, create programs, or organize events; for a time commitment
of several hours a week, just once a month, or even once a year for a special
event. It is up to you to get involved.
Volunteering your time and energy is a fantastic way to learn and develop
useful and marketable skills, meet new people in your field, explore new
interests, try out or observe potential jobs and careers, gain experience,
give back to your community, and have a great time in the process. Employers
and graduate schools alike view the skills and experience gained from
volunteering very positively – unpaid experience is still valuable
experience.
The following list of resources, organized by geographic location, is
designed to give you a sense of some of the many opportunities available on
and around campus, in Montreal, across Canada, and internationally. If you
are new to volunteering, the section on volunteer bureaus and services is a
great place to start.
