Masters & PhDs

In addition to CaPS' regular programs and resources, we offer specialized services for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows including workshops, Grad Career Week, Academia Week, and Government Career Week.

You can also meet with one of two Graduate Career Advisors by calling 514-398-3304 to schedule an appointment. During this time you can discuss any career concerns you may have or receive help with any aspect of the job search process. If you need your CV reviewed, or have a quick question, use our weekly CV Drop-In.

If you are interested in working in academia come to Academia Week, offered every October, where faculty members provide perspectives on how to: network at academic conferences, market your research, deliver a successful job talk, conduct yourself at academic interviews, and negotiate your first contract.

If you are interested in building your Teaching Portfolio, you may wish to visit Teaching & Learning Services who can provide you with samples of Teaching Philosophy statements. For an on-line tutorial on how to create Teaching Portfolios and statements, please go to the University of Minnesota Center for Teaching and Learning web site.

SKILLSETS: Professional Development Workshops for Graduate Students is a new initiative by Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and Teaching and Learning Services. This suite of workshops for graduate students will complement the research training provided by the students’ academic experience at McGill. Workshops will provide more general transitional/professional skill development opportunities recommended for training High Quality Personnel. For a list of scheduled workshops and how to register, click here.

Additionally our Resource Centre contains a number of publications on the academic job market and on job search techniques. Subscriptions to several on-line employment publications are also available to registered McGill students (eg. International Employment Weekly, The Chronicle of Higher Education, University Affairs, Going Global).

If working outside the academy intrigues you, CaPS offers year round recruitment and networking events, and Grad Career Week in March. If working for the government is of interest, then our Government Career Week would be the place for you. All of these events are an excellent place for you to showcase your research and explore your career options in the government, NGO, business, and volunteer sectors.

For a full listing of workshops, their dates and times, and to RSVP, please log-in into myFuture and click on the 'Events' tab.
