Genetic counseling

Familial cancer risk counseling is a communication process between health care professionals and an individual concerning the occurrence, or risk of occurrence, of cancer in his or her family (Peters JA, 1994). Persons considering cancer susceptibility risk evaluation and/or genetic testing should seek genetic counseling services provided by qualified professionals.

Cancer genetic counselors are health professionals, with specialized graduate degree and experience in cancer genetics, working as part of an interdisciplinary health care team.
