The Journey to Come: Message from the Principal

As a young man, James McGill left the old world for the new, to forge a better life built on hard work, public service and philanthropy. Today, the University he founded continues its own journey to be a driving force in human progress, both at home and abroad.

Canada is blessed with a fine system of universities, each with its own special mission. McGill is distinguished by its international reputation, global reach, and the strength, quality and diversity of its student body and professorate. Our faculty members are world-renowned for their teaching and research, and we attract Canada’s brightest students, who join their peers from about 160 countries to create a vibrant network of intellectual and creative horsepower.

A McGill education extends far beyond the 300 programs of study offered on our two campuses. Whether via field study programs in Panama, Barbados or Africa, an internship with an international government, NGO or corporation, or study abroad with one of our 500 partner universities, McGill’s students have access to a world of opportunities.

Campaign McGill: History in the Making is our ambitious effort to continue building on these strengths for our students, and the publics we serve, both today and tomorrow. Our Campaign builds on a disciplined academic plan, and will leverage our resources to attract and retain top talent, to increase access to quality education, and to further enhance our contributions as a great international university.

As I write this note, I am preparing for my own travels. The Making History Tour will give me the opportunity to meet with and thank our alumni and friends around the globe, and to share the accomplishments that McGill is realizing through your support to Campaign McGill. I hope to see you at one of these events, as we highlight McGill’s impact on the world stage and reinforce our commitment to preparing our students for their future as global trailblazers.
