PhotographeFor the first time in living memory, the clocks at the Roddick Gates are actually working. Equally amazing: the four bells inside the clock tower are now chiming with Westminster melodies.
Renovations to this iconic McGill landmark are thanks in large part to the determined efforts of Dr. Joseph Hanaway, BA'56, MDCM'60, who volunteered his time since 2006, researching and collaborating with Birks (the suppliers of the original mechanisms in 1925), along with clock makers, technicians, historians, archivists, and McGill facilities staff.
The clocks are now restored, weather-sealed and satellite-controlled, while the four bronze bells are computer-controlled and can be set to ring at any schedule. The newly restored bells and clocks were launched at a special ceremony on Friday, October 1, 2010, during Homecoming.
