To lead in management education requires that we bring together the world’s foremost professors, brightest students, and industry experts, as well as provide a learning and research environment judged to be of the highest international calibre. Thanks to the exceptional support of alumni and friends since the launch of Campaign McGill, the Desautels Faculty of Management has met important milestones in achieving these goals.
We began our transformation by renaming the Faculty of Management to the Desautels Faculty of Management in 2005, in honour of our outstanding benefactor, Marcel Desautels, CM, O.Ont., LLD’07, who exceptionally donated $32 million to the Faculty. Beyond his funding, Dr. Desautels’ commitment impressed upon our community that the Faculty was entering an exciting new era of investment, innovation, and global outreach.
Since then, our Faculty has pushed the boundaries of traditional business education. With the support and vision of Dr. Desautels and our constituents, and through the Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management, we have strengthened our position as a leader in developing and delivering a holistic and integrated approach to our teaching and research, and to the practice of management. As a result, our graduates learn to work across managerial boundaries, and understand organizations and their role in our economy and society. Our professors are increasingly collaborating on teaching and research within and outside the Faculty in areas such as health and risk management, resulting in greater innovation and better problem-solving.
Thanks to the generosity of our alumni and friends, we have also significantly improved our student services, academic programs, resource deployment, infrastructure, and research capacity. Among the key changes: Redesign of the BCom program to emphasize a broader cross-disciplinary education, development of a self-funded integrated MBA curriculum, and launch of new programs including the part-time Professional MBA, International Masters in Health Leadership, and our bilingual Executive MBA with HEC Montréal. We have hired over 35 professors and made important investments in student advising, career services, and major facility renovations.
These initiatives enhanced the reputation of Desautels and of McGill. Our undergraduate admissions standards are among the most selective in Canada, now with almost 10 applications for each available place. At the MBA level, we achieved the best results in job placement rate (95%) and average post-MBA compensation ($115,500) in Canada. With the remarkable support of over 1,400 donors last year, we surpassed our $1 million Annual Fund goal for the first time in our history.
Truly, the Desautels Faculty is among the world’s best and we owe much of this to the extraordinary generosity of our alumni and friends. I extend my gratitude to all of our Campaign McGill supporters for their votes of confidence in our students, our Faculty, and our University.
