  • The Hon. Michael A. Meighen QC BA’60 Toronto Campaign Co-Chair
    Meighen

    Senator Michael A. Meighen has a longstanding association with his alma mater, McGill University. He serves on the Board of Governors, is chair of the McGill Fund Council, and two of his sons, Hugh and Max, currently attend McGill. The son of lawyer and philanthropist Theodore Meighen and grandson of former Canadian prime minister Arthur Meighen, Michael Meighen earned a BA from McGill in 1960 and an LLL at Université Laval in 1963. Senator Meighen has had a distinguished career as a litigation and commercial lawyer in Montreal and Toronto. In the mid-1980s, he was appointed co-legal counsel to the Deschênes Commission of Inquiry on War Criminals, and in 1990 he became Counsel at Meighen Demers, now Ogilvy Renault. Appointed to the Senate of Canada in 1990 by former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Mr. Meighen has served on a number of high-profile Senate committees, including the Standing Committees on Banking, Trade and Commerce; National Security and Defence; Fisheries; and as chair of the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs. He has been a director of Caledon Trust, Paribas Participations Ltd., Sentry Select Capital Corp. and J.C. Clark Ltd., and a chair of the Cundill Investment Advisory Committee. Mr. Meighen is a past chair of the Stratford Festival, current chair of the T.R. Meighen Family Foundation and chancellor of the University of King’s College in Halifax, N.S.

  • Eugene C. McBurney LLB’77 Toronto Campaign Co-Chair
    McBurney

    Eugene C. McBurney serves as Chairman of GMP Securities L.P., formerly Griffiths McBurney & Partners. Mr. McBurney earned a BA and MA at the University of Windsor in the early seventies, and completed an LLB at McGill in 1977. After graduation, Mr. McBurney returned to Toronto and was called to the Bar of the Province of Ontario in 1979. Over the course of his 16-year legal career, he focused on securities law and advised many companies and investment dealers. In 1995, Mr. McBurney co-founded Griffiths McBurney & Partners. As head of GMP’s mining group, he leverages his extensive knowledge and experience to position GMP as a leader in global mining finance. A member of the executive committee of the Investment Dealers Association from 1999 to 2002, Mr. McBurney also served on the Audit Committee of McGill’s Board of Governors from 2001 to 2004. He is currently an honorary director of the Canadian Paraplegic Association and sits on the board of Canada's Walk of Fame.

  • L. Yves Fortier CC OQ QC BCL’58 LLD’05 Montreal Campaign Co-Chair

    Yves Fortier, a Senior Partner and Chairman of the law firm Ogilvy Renault, is a McGill alumnus and Rhodes Scholar (BLitt’60). During a long and distinguished career, Mr. Fortier has been a trial lawyer, arbitrator and diplomat. Recognized as the world’s top arbitrator by The American Lawyer/Focus Europe in 2005, Mr. Fortier has pleaded important cases before domestic and international arbitral tribunals and, from 1984 to 1989, he was a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague. Between 1988 and 1992 Mr. Fortier served as Canada’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, as well as President of the UN Security Council in 1989. In 1998, he was elected president of the London Court of International Arbitration, and continued until 2001, when he became an honorary vice-president. Mr. Fortier was national president of the Canadian Bar Association from 1982 to 1983. He has served as a governor of McGill University, as a governor and director of the Hudson’s Bay Company and as a director of the Montreal Neurological Institute, the Royal Bank of Canada, and Nortel Networks Corporation and Nortel Networks Limited, among other organizations. In 1991 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada and in 1994 was made a Companion of the Order of Canada, the highest level of the Order. Mr. Fortier is also the recipient of the Médaille d’Or du Barreau du Québec and in 2006, he was appointed an Officer of the Ordre national du Québec.

    MacBain

    John McCall MacBain, with his wife, Marcy, heads the McCall MacBain Foundation, which focuses on health and education projects in sub-Saharan Africa, climate change initiatives and post-secondary education. Mr. McCall MacBain graduated from McGill University in 1980 with an Honours BA in Economics. During his undergraduate years, he was president of the McGill Students’ Society, valedictorian and head of both Welcome Week and the Winter Carnival. Mr. McCall MacBain attended Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship, earning an MA in Law in 1982, and went on to graduate from the Harvard Business School in 1984 with an MBA. In 1987, he founded Trader Classified Media. Starting with three publications in Montreal, the business grew to become the world’s leading company in the local classified sector, with 350 titles and 50 Internet sites in 23 countries and leading positions in Canada, Spain, Russia, Australia, France, Italy, China, Hungary and Argentina. Following the sale of the company in 2006, the McCall MacBains set up their foundation, working with Donald Johnston, former Canadian Justice Minister and retired head of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

  • Jacques Bougie OC Montreal
    Bougie

    Jacques Bougie, who earned an LLL from the Université de Montréal and an MBA from the École des Hautes Études Commerciales (HEC), started working at Alcan as a manager at the company’s Beauharnois smelter in 1979. Ten years later he was appointed the company’s president and COO and in 1993 was named CEO as well, a position he held until 2001. During his tenure, Mr. Bougie helped make Alcan the main supplier of aluminum to General Motors and was the architect of the greatest expansion in the company’s history, acquiring AluSuisse and laying the groundwork for the acquisition of the French group Péchiney. He is currently chair of the International Advisory Committee of CGI Group Inc., chair of the board of Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. and a director of Nova Chemicals Inc. and McCain Foods Ltd.

    Mr. Bougie was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000 and was presented with an honorary doctorate from the Université de Montréal in 2001. Since 2002 he has been an associate professor in management at HEC.

  • Roshi Chadha Montreal
    Chadha

    Mrs. Chadha brings her passion for community development, education, and culture to a range of organizations. She currently serves as an advisory member of the Canadian Red Cross, was appointed as a Member Trustee of the National Gallery of Canada in 2006, and serves as a member of the Board of the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation. Mrs. Chadha’s commitment to excellence in education is reflected in her close affiliation to McGill, as a member of the Board of Governors (since 2003). Mrs. Chadha has a long-standing association with the Agri Foods Division of Balcorp Limited, and in 1999 cofounded with her husband, Baljit, the Chadha Family Foundation, providing bursaries every year to Indo-Canadian students at McGill and Concordia Universities. Mrs. Chadha brings her expertise, commitment to McGill and strong vision for educational institutions to her role as a member of the McGill Board of Governors Audit and Human Resources Committees, the Joint Board-Senate Committee on Equity, the Campaign McGill Cabinet, and currently serves as a Board representative to the University Senate.

  • John E. Cleghorn OC FCA BCom’62 LLD’04 Toronto

    Dr. Cleghorn, became a governor emeritus in 2005 after serving the University with great distinction as a member of the Board and in his long-standing volunteer leadership role with Development and Alumni Relations. He served as chair of the Twenty-First Century Fund, McGill’s last capital campaign, which set a national fund-raising record at that time. His career with the Royal Bank of Canada began in 1974, where he served as chairman and chief executive officer until 2001. Dr. Cleghorn serves as chair of the board of SNC-Lavalin Group as well as a director of Canadian Pacific Railway, Finning International, Molson, and Nortel Networks. He is chair of the International Advisory Board of McGill’s Faculty of Management, chancellor emeritus of Wilfrid Laurier University, and past chair of Historica Foundation of Canada. He was named an officer of the Order of Canada in 2001 and holds honorary degrees from Acadia, Bishop’s, and Wilfrid Laurier universities. Dr. Cleghorn received an honorary degree from McGill in 2004.

  • Stuart H. Cobbett BA’69 BCL’72 Montreal
    Stuart Kip Cobbett

    Chair of McGill’s Board of Governors, Stuart (Kip) Cobbett has a long-standing relationship with the University, having served as an active member of the McGill Alumni Association for many years and as its president in 2002-2003. He also taught as a part-time lecturer in the Faculty of Law from 1976 to 1985. From 1985 to 1992, Mr. Cobbett was senior vice-president and a director of Astral Communications Inc. and president of its wholly owned subsidiaries. Prior to that time, he was a partner in a major Montreal law firm. He is currently managing partner of the Montreal office and chief operating officer of the firm Stikeman Elliott LLP. His practice covers most areas of corporate and commercial law, with emphasis on financing and mergers and acquisitions as well as specific expertise in media, entertainment and communications. Mr. Cobbett is a governor of the Quebec Bar Foundation and serves on the boards of Formula Growth Limited, McCord Street Sites, and Aldeavision Inc. He is a member of the Audit Committee and the Building and Property Committee.

  • Elizabeth Comper MLS’79 Toronto

    Elizabeth Comper earned a BA at Concordia while working full-time as an elementary school teacher, and continued her studies at McGill (MLS’79). Several years later, when her husband was transferred back to Toronto, Mrs. Comper found a new career in charitable work, first with the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care and subsequently on the board of directors of the Tarragon Theatre. For the past six years Mrs. Comper has been chair of the Founders Committee of the Elinore & Lou Siminovitch Prize in Theatre, Canada’s largest annual arts award. She is also a member of the board of trustees of the Art Gallery of Ontario and is a director of the Ontario Arts Council Foundation, the Royal Conservatory of Music and the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, which has honoured her with its Human Relations Award.

    Mrs. Comper personally funds scholarships to support various causes, providing financial aid for aboriginal single mothers entering university and supporting the Charles and Betty Webster International Study Scholarship at the University of Guelph, in honour of her parents. The University of Haifa awarded Mrs. Comper an honorary degree in 2006, and the following year, she received the Scopus Award from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

  • F. Anthony Comper Toronto

    Tony Comper, the immediate past president and CEO of BMO Financial Group, joined the bank shortly after graduating from the University of Toronto. Getting his start in domestic branches in 1967, Mr. Comper spent nearly 40 years in a variety of areas at BMO. While with the bank’s Operations and Systems Development group, he played a major role in the development of a nation-wide, real-time computer system – an industry-leading innovation at the time. In 1990 Mr. Comper was named President, and 1999 saw him appointed Chairman and CEO. A trustee of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Mr. Comper also serves as a member of the international advisory committee of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. In addition, he is a director of Spectra Energy Corp., the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and the Canadian Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre for Holocaust Studies. In 1988 he received the Human Relations Award from the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews and was presented with the Award of Merit from B’Nai Brith Canada in 2003. Along with his wife Elizabeth, he recently founded FAST, a new initiative aimed at combating anti-Semitism in Canada.

  • Marvin Corber CM FCA Montreal
    Corber

    Marvin Corber earned his chartered accountant’s diploma in 1957 and was awarded the prestigious FCA designation in 1986. He has been a partner at RSM Richter (formerly Richter, Usher & Vineberg) since 1958 and served as its managing partner from 1989 to 1996.

    In 2002 Mr. Corber was named a Member of the Order of Canada, in recognition of his outstanding dedication and service to his community. Over 40 years he has lent his energy and vision to many community and national organizations. He has been president of the Jerusalem Foundation of Canada and the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Montreal, and was chairman of the Combined Jewish Appeal. Mr. Corber has also shown a longstanding commitment to the health and well-being of Montreal community organizations, taking on leadership positions at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, the Queen Elizabeth Health Complex, the Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation, the Montreal Neurological Institute, the Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital and the Douglas Mental health University Institute. He has also played a significant role in the education sector as a member and deputy chairman of McGill’s Board of Governors, chairman of planned giving at McGill, and a member of the McCord Museum’s board of directors.

  • Nan-B de Gaspé Beaubien BA’58 MSc(A)’60 Montreal
    Beaubien

    Nan-B de Gaspé Beaubien was involved in establishing Télémedia Corp. in 1968 and helping it become one of Canada’s leading media communications enterprises. As the company’s vice-president, she helped build a unique corporate culture that led to Télémedia being named one of the best 100 Canadian employers. Mrs. de Gaspé Beaubien also helped create the Montreal Learning Centre, where she worked as a psychologist. Her research into television’s effects on children led her to establish the Children’s Broadcast Institute. She served as president of the Canadian Council of Children and Youth, and helped establish both the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise and the Business Families Foundation, which offers support to business families and the professionals who work for them.

    Mrs. de Gaspé Beaubien was awarded the Canadian Centennial Medal in 1967 for her hosting functions before and during Expo 67, where her husband served as director of operations, and in 2003 she was inducted into the CAB Broadcast Hall of Fame. In 2006 she and her husband were presented with the Philanthropy Merit Award by the Quebec government.

  • Geoffrey Kelley BA'81, MA’85 Montreal
    Geoffrey Kelly

    Geoffrey Kelley is Member for Jacques-Cartier, representing the Québec Liberal Party at the Québec National Assembly, where he currently serves as Chair of the Committee on Social Affairs. Mr. Kelley is a McGill graduate, with a BA in history and a Master’s degree in modern Canadian history. He worked as an educator for 13 years (including lecturing at McGill), as Communications and Research Director for Alliance Québec for four years, and then as a political aide for four years, before successfully running for political office in September 1994..

    He has since been re-elected three times and has served in numerous capacities including: Minister for Native Affairs from 2005 to 2007, Chair of the Committee on Social Affairs since 2007, Chair of the Committee on Education from 2003 to 2005, Chair of the Committee of Public Administration from 1999 to 2003, and Official Opposition critic at various times for family policy and native affairs.Mr. Kelley is active in his community, serving as a board member at a Montreal adult education centre and on the Foundation of the West Island Palliative Care Residence. He and his wife, Judy, have five children, and they have recently been appointed Co-Chairs of the McGill Parents Association.

    In addition to contributing loyally to McGill since 1982, the Kelleys are very active in community philanthropy, supporting such causes as the Montreal Children’s Hospital, the West Island Palliative Care Residence, West Island Community Shares (WICS), the Association for the Protection of Angell Woods (APAW) and the West Island Crusade Against Cancer (WICAC).

  • Judy Kelley Cert Sp Ed'81 Montreal
    Judy Kelley

    Judy Kelley, an alumna of Simon Fraser and York University, also graduated from McGill in 1981 with a Certificate in Special Education (now called the Certificate in Inclusive Education). She has 30 years of teaching experience that includes CEGEP, high school, adult and special education. She is a commissioner with the Lester B. Pearson School Board, where she serves as vice-chair of the Adult and Vocational Education Committee, a member of the Education Committee, as well as a delegate of the LBPSB Special Needs Advisory Committee. In June, 2008, Judy was nominated as chair of the Board of Governors of John Abbott College.

    She is married to Geoffrey Kelley, the MNA for the Jacques-Cartier riding in the Québec National Assembly. Mr. and Mrs. Kelley have recently been appointed Co-Chairs of the McGill Parents Association in support of Campaign McGill. They have five children, including Tess, who graduated from McGill with a BA in international development in 2007, Gregory, Marisa and Angela who are currently studying at McGill and Sara who will be applying to McGill in March 2009.

    In addition to contributing loyally to McGill since 1982, the Kelleys are very active in community philanthropy, supporting such causes as the Montreal Children’s Hospital, the West Island Palliative Care Residence, West Island Community Shares (WICS), the Association for the Protection of Angell Woods (APAW) and the West Island Crusade Against Cancer (WICAC).

  • Milton K.H. Leong BSc’66 MDCM’70 DSc’00 Hong Kong
    Milton Leong

    Born in Hong Kong, Dr. Milton Leong graduated from McGill University with an honours biochemistry degree in 1966 and his medical degree in 1970, followed by specialist O&G training. In 1975, he was appointed Assistant Professor at McGill and Director of High Risk Obstetrics at the McGill University Hospital until 1979, when he returned to Hong Kong to set up his own practice. Dr. Leong is now Director of the In-Vitro Fertilization Centre at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital, and he continues to be an adjunct professor in O&G at McGill.

    A dedicated volunteer to McGill, Dr. Leong is President and a founding member of the Martlet Foundation Hong Kong, and he served as the President of the McGill Society of Hong Kong from 1996 to 2000. In 1998, Dr. Leong was awarded the McGill Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award. Since January 2007, he has been a member of the Campaign Committee for Asia. Dr. Leong’s generosity to McGill includes the creation of three faculty chairs and the Dr. and Mrs. Milton Leong Fellowships in Health Sciences. As well, he has provided scholarships for undergraduates to study both at McGill and in the U.K. In 2000 he was honoured with a DSc from McGill.

  • Brian M. Levitt Montreal

    Brian Levitt is Co-Chair of the firm and practices in the Montreal office of Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt. One of the leading corporate governance and M&A advisors in Canada, Brian advises Canadian, U.S. and foreign corporations on Canadian securities laws and cross-jurisdictional requirements and implications. The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory 2006 lists him as a most frequently recommended practitioner in the mergers and acquisitions sector, and as consistently recommended in the corporate finance and corporate-commercial areas.

    Mr. Levitt first joined Osler’s Toronto office in 1976 and became a partner in 1979. He left the firm in 1991 to become president and CEO of Imasco, positions he held until 2000. He returned to Osler in 2001 where he resumed his position as co-chair and subsequently opened the Montréal office. Mr. Levitt is the chairman of Domtar, vice-chairman of the Foundation of Greater Montreal and a director at Bell Canada Enterprises (BCE) and the C.D. Howe Institute. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

  • Heather Munroe-Blum OC OQ FRSC Montreal
    Heather Munroe-Blum

    Heather Munroe-Blum is Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University and Professor in Medicine. A distinguished psychiatric epidemiologist, she has dedicated her career to the advancement of higher education, science and innovation, in Canada and internationally, advising governments and other organizations on the role that universities and research play in advancing international competitiveness and enriching societies.

    Prof. Munroe-Blum serves on numerous private and public boards, including the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), the Council of Canadian Academies and the Universities Research Association Inc. She chairs the AUCC Standing Advisory Committee on University Research (SACUR), is President of the Conférence des recteurs et des principaux des universités du Québec (CREPUQ), past Chair of the Universitas 21 Network, and a member of the Association of American Universities and the Trilateral Commission. She also serves on the boards of the Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital, the Yellow Pages Group, Alcan Inc. and the Members’ group of the Canada Foundation for Innovation.

    Prof. Munroe-Blum has received numerous honours and awards. Named an Officer of the Order of Canada as well as an Officer of the Order of Quebec, she holds numerous honorary degrees from Canadian and international universities and is a Specially Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

  • David P. O'Brien OC BCL’65 Calgary

    David O’Brien, a McGill alumnus (BCL’65), is chairman of two of Canada’s largest corporations, the Royal Bank of Canada and EnCana Corp. He also serves on the board of TransCanada Corp., Molson Coors Brewing Co. and Focus Energy Trust.

    Mr. O’Brien started his career as a lawyer at the Montreal firm, Ogilvy Renault. He joined Petro-Canada in 1978 and was the company’s executive vice-president when he left in 1989. Following five years at the helm of PanCanadian Energy Corp., Mr. O’Brien was named CEO of Canadian Pacific Ltd., where he oversaw CP’s successful break-up into five public companies. Returning to PanCanadian Energy as CEO, Mr. O’Brien negotiated the corporation’s merger with Alberta Energy Company Ltd. to create EnCana Corp., North America’s largest independent oil and gas company.

    A recipient of many business awards, including the Distinguished Business Leader award from the University of Calgary and the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, Mr. O’Brien was inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame in 2004 and was named a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors in 2005.

  • Richard W. Pound OC OQ QC FCA BCom’62 BCL’67 Montreal

    Partner in the international law firm of Stikeman Elliott, Richard Pound is an alumnus of both McGill (BCom, BCL) and Concordia universities. Mr. Pound is recognized as one of Canada's leading lawyers in the area of tax litigation. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1991 and a fellow of the Order of Chartered Accountants in 2000. A world-class athlete, Mr. Pound was a double Olympic finalist in the 1960 Olympic Games, Commonwealth champion in 1962, and has competed as a nationally-ranked squash player. His experience both on and off the field has provided the ideal background to his exceptional work for the International Olympic Committee. Within the IOC, he has held numerous high-profile positions and is currently chair of the Olympic Games Study Commission and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Richard Pound was first appointed to the Board of Governors in 1986, has served as its chair and also as Chancellor of McGill from 1999 to 2009. He is the chair of the McGill Athletics Board and currently serves as a member of the Executive Committee and the Nominating and Governance Committee.

  • Cynthia A. Price BCom’82 Montreal
    Cynthia Price

    Cynthia Price is president of the McGill Alumni Association, where she engages alumni, students, parents and friends of McGill with her warm, outgoing personality. Prior to her election as president, she served as vice-president and a member of the Board of Directors of the MAA. She was also Homecoming Chair in 2008. She further serves the University as co-chair of the International Alma Mater Fund Council and as an active member of both the Educational Initiative on Interprofessional Collaboration and the MUHC Patient Advisory Council.

    Cynthia held several senior management positions during her 20 years in the petroleum industry before leaving the corporate world in 2001 to focus on the not-for-profit and philanthropic sectors. She currently serves as president of the Matthew Ralph Kane Foundation and vice-chair of the Canadiana Fund. As director and chair emerita of the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation she has played and continues to play a key role in positioning the organization as a leading fundraiser for research, education, awareness and support programs. A 2004 Quebec Woman of Distinction, Cynthia divides her volunteer time between numerous other not-for-profit organizations, including Dans la rue, the Montreal General, Montreal Chest and Montreal Children’s Hospitals, Starlight Foundation, Cedar’s Cancer Institute, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Miss Edgar’s and Miss Cramp’s School, Montreal Chamber Orchestra, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, McCord Museum and the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec.

  • Robert Rabinovitch BCom’64 Montreal
    Rabinovitch

    A graduate of McGill University and the University of Pennsylvania, Robert Rabinovitch holds an MA and a PhD in economics and finance. He has held important senior positions in the federal government including deputy secretary to the Cabinet for Planning, deputy minister in the Department of Communications and under secretary of state. In 1987 he joined Claridge Inc. as senior vice-president, becoming its chief operating officer in 1990. In 1999, Dr. Rabinovitch re-entered the public arena, becoming president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Dr. Rabinovitch has served on many corporate boards, including those of Cineplex Odeon and NetStar Communications. He was chair of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Jewish Congress (Quebec) until his appointment to CBC/Radio-Canada. Dr. Rabinovitch is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Sauve Scholars Foundation and of the Nunavut Trust Investment Advisory Committee. In 2003, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by York University. Dr. Rabinovitch has been a member of McGill's Board of Governors since 1997 and served as its chair from 1999 to 2010.

  • Seymour Schulich CM BSc’61 MBA’65 DLitt’04 Toronto

    Seymour Schulich is a McGill alumnus and obtained his CFA designation from the University of Virginia. He began his career at Shell Oil and later joined Beutel, Goodman & Co., one of Canada’s largest pension fund companies, where he spent 22 years - the last three as president. In 1985, Mr. Schulich pioneered the concept of royalty payments in the mining industry and co-founded two gold royalty companies - Euro-Nevada and Franco-Nevada. In 2002, Franco-Nevada merged with Normandy Mining Ltd. and Newmont Mining Corp, creating the largest gold mining company in the world. Mr. Schulich became a director of the resulting firm, and was chairman of its merchant banking division until 2007.

    A prominent Canadian philanthropist, Mr. Schulich has donated more than $210-million to universities, foundations and health care centres across North America. Here at his alma mater, Mr. Schulich is the benefactor of McGill’s Library of Engineering and Science and in 2005 the music faculty – Canada’s largest – was renamed the Schulich School of Music in recognition of his $20-million donation. He subsequently underscored his support by creating the Golden Violin, an award and scholarship for young musicians. Named a Member of the Order of Canada in 2000, Mr. Schulich has received honorary doctorates from McGill University, York University and Technion in Israel. He was inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame in 2006.

    McGill graduate Gerald Sheff is co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of the investment firm, Gluskin Sheff + Associates Inc. Previously, he held senior executive positions with the Cadillac Fairview Corporation, serving as president of its land and housing operations and as a director. Mr. Sheff is active in many community and charitable organizations. He is a trustee of the Art Gallery of Ontario Foundation, a member of the board of Mount Sinai Hospital, a director of Baycrest Hospital, and past chair of the United Jewish Appeal. He has also served as a director of the Ontario College of Art, the Harvard Business School Club, the Arthritis Society, and the Canadian Stage Company. Mr. Sheff was appointed to the Board of Governors in January 2001. He currently serves on the Investment Committee and is past chair of the Building and Property Committee.

    Soutar

    After obtaining a degree in mining engineering, and then studying finance at the London School of Economics, Mr. Soutar joined Sun Life Assurance Co. in 1960. In 1965, he joined a small mutual fund owned by Power Corp. and helped manage the All-Canadian Growth Fund. In 1968 Mr. Soutar became one of the founding partners of the investment management firm Pembroke Management Ltd., where he currently serves as vice-chair and partner. He is president and chief executive officer of the GBC North American Growth Fund and co-manager of both the GBC North American and Canadian Growth Funds, with over $500 million in assets under management. Mr. Soutar's realms of particular expertise include healthcare, financial services and the metals and mining sectors. Mr. Soutar became a governor emeritus of McGill’s Board of Governors in 2005. He is a long-standing member of the Investment Committee, which he now chairs. Mr. Soutar also recently assumed the chair of the Committee to Advise on Matters of Social Responsibility and serves as a member of the Fund Council and of the Board of MSBi Inc.

    Paul M. Tellier, LLD’05, is a graduate of both the University of Ottawa and Oxford University and was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1963. He was president, CEO and director of Bombardier Inc. from 2003 to 2004 and prior to that, spent ten years in those positionas at the Canadian National Railway Company. During the seven years leading up to his appointment to CN, Mr. Tellier was Clerk of the Privy Council and secretary to the Cabinet of the Government of Canada - the country’s top public servant.

    Mr. Tellier serves as a director of several corporations including Alcan, Bell Canada Enterprises, Bell Canada, Canadian Forest Products (CANFOR), GM Canada, McCain Foods and Telesat Canada. He is also a strategic advisor to Société Générale, a global bank headquartered in France, and a board member of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIAR). Mr. Tellier was recognized as Canada’s Most Respected CEO by a KPMG/Ipsos Reid survey in 2003, and has as including Canada’s Outstanding CEO of the Year (1998) and induction as a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1993. He joined the McGill Desautels Faculty of Management advisory board in September 2006.

    Trottier

    Lorne Trottier, a Governor Emeritus of McGill University, holds two degrees from McGill and in 2006 was awarded an honorary degree by his alma mater. He is the co-founder of Matrox, a privately held group of companies that is internationally known for its innovative computer graphics, video, and imaging products. Over the past 30 years, Matrox has won more than 1,000 awards from industry trade organizations and magazines.

    In 2003 Mr. Trottier was awarded the Prix Lionel Boulet by the Quebec government and in 2007 he was named a Member of the Order of Canada. He serves on the Board of the Montreal Science Centre, the Millennium Committee of the Planetary Society and a number of other organizations. The Trottier Family Foundation, established in 2000, supports science and technology education, public health care and third world economic development.

    Ann Vroom graduated from McGill University in 1967 with a BA in languages. After working as chief hostess at the Canadian Pavilion at Expo '67, she worked in public relations at Eaton's, taught merchandising and communications at Collège LaSalle and ran a textile sales operation. In the 1980s Ms. Vroom returned to her alma mater as editor of the McGill News magazine. She later moved to Concordia as director of alumni affairs and was eventually named executive director of student recruitment. In 2001 Ms. Vroom became the first executive director of the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education, a nationwide association for advancement professionals at universities, colleges and independent schools. She subsequently worked as an independent educational advancement consultant and is currently president of both the McGill Society of Montreal and the 185,000-member McGill Alumni Association (MAA).

    In addition to her longstanding volunteer service to McGill, Ms. Vroom has held leadership roles with the international Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), serving on its Board of Trustees and teaching at numerous CASE conferences in Europe, the United States and Canada. She is also a trustee of Portage, a program for drug dependencies, and has served on the boards of Sacred Heart School and the McGill Chamber Orchestra, as well as the fundraising committees at the Montreal Children's Hospital and Centaur Theatre.

    Tania Zouikin is a graduate of both McGill University (BA’72) and the MIT Sloan School of Management. A chartered financial analyst, she was affiliated with Batterymarch Financial Management for 25 years as chairman and CEO and as co-founder of Batterymarch Canada. Prior to joining Batterymarch, Ms. Zouikin was a global pension fund manager for Alcan Aluminum Ltd.

    She is currently involved on the executive committees and international advisory boards of McGill University, the Instituto de Empresa in Madrid and the Russell 20-20 group, and has served on advisory boards at the MIT Sloan School, the Northeastern University College of Business and the Conference Board’s Research Council on Global Investment. She has also been a guest lecturer on international finance, management and entrepreneurship at a number of prestigious institutions, including the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, MIT’s Sloan School of Management and Bentley College. She is vice-chair, overseers of the Boston Lyric Opera and a member of the presidential advisory council of the Berklee College of Music.
