Pathological dynamics in physiological systems
In cardiac physiology, the existence of arrhythmias associated with ion channel pathologies are now well known. We are bringing together systems modelling expertise (Vigmond) and nonlinear dynamics models (Glass) to analyze dynamics in model experimental systems (cardiac aggregates subjected to drugs that block potassium channels in experiments carried out in the Shrier laboratory). This will be extended to analyze initiation of arrhythmia in whole heart models and in patients with drug induced arrhythmias. This has significant long range potential for better assessment of risk of sudden cardiac death.
