The Biomedical Ethics Unit is closely linked to and supported by the
hospitals and committees of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) and
the other McGill teaching and affiliated hospitals. The Unit is responsible
for providing them with both clinical ethics and research ethics services.
Unit members each have clinical appointments in one or more of these
hospitals, spend an average of two days per week on site, and are available
at other times as well. Their primary responsibilities are:
- to provide ethics consultations on request by hospital staff, patients or
family members regarding specific cases or hospital policies and practices;
- to serve as members and/or chairs of the hospitals' clinical ethics
committees and research ethics committees;
- to provide ethics teaching rounds for hospital units, services and
departments.
