Profile

Dr. Young J. Choi is a research officer at the Bioprocess Centre of the National Research Council of Canada's Biotechnology Research Institute (NRC-BRI) in Montreal. He joined BRI in 2001 as a research associate and was serving until recently as Research Officer of the Microbial and Enzymatic Technology Group in the Bioprocess Centre.

He received his Ph.D. in Biotechnology from the department of Food science and Agricultural chemistry at McGill University in 2000 and then pursued postdoctoral research training at McGill University, working on lactic enzymes and its industrial applications. In 2009, he is appointed as an adjunct professor in the department of Bioresources Engineering at McGill University. His work focused initially on the process development of large-scale production of recombinant proteins with the microbial expression system including lactic acid bacteria and lately on highly efficient methylotrophic systems as new generation of microbial hosts.

Recently, he has developed novel regulative gene expression systems in methylotrophic bacterium, which is the first developed regulated systems in the field of methylotrophy, and US & world patent have been awarded for this technology. He is currently focusing his efforts on the C1 microbial platform for the production of biofuels, bionutraceuticals, and pharmaceuticals from one carbon compounds such as methanol and/or methane by using metabolic engineering. He is a member of the Gordon Research Conference (GRC): Molecular basis of Microbial One Carbon (C1) Metabolism, American Society for Microbiology (ASM), Society for Industrial Microbiology (SIM), American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) and Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry.
