In Biochemistry at McGill you will join research teams carrying out exciting, innovative science. The Department’s 29 full-time members are complemented by another 25 Associate and Adjunct and members. They have made ground-breaking discoveries, from identifying the gene that causes spina bifida to documenting complex processes governing the regulation of protein synthesis to tracking gene expression in breast cancer development. That’s why the McGill Biochemistry program is known and respected around the globe.

World Class Facilities

Biochemistry graduate students have the opportunity to work in some of Canada’s newest and most well-equipped academic research facilities. The McGill Life Sciences Complex, including the new Francisco Bellini Life Sciences Building and the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Centre, boasts large, open-plan research labs and state-of-the-art equipment.

Stimulating Programs

Graduate studies in Biochemistry is research-intensive. You will take courses in core areas and in your specialty, but most of your activity will take place in the laboratory, where you will be part of our vibrant, world-class research community. Financial Support

Thanks to Biochemistry’s guaranteed graduate student stipend, you will be a paid researcher.

Masters students receive a minimum stipend of $20,000 annually; doctoral students receive $22,000. In addition, graduate students are eligible to apply for both internal and external scholarships.

Streamlined PhDs and Special Programs: Our streamlined graduate program means you can enter the Masters program but, assuming you meet the academic criteria, transfer to the PhD program after your first year. You can also follow one of our special graduate programs in Chemical Biology, Bioinformatics, Cancer Research/Oncology, and Structural Biology
