Biochemistry Graduate Excellence Fellowships (GEF)

Merit Fellowships

Graduate students in the Department of Biochemistry can apply for competitive Graduate Excellence Fellowships for Merit. The top qualifying students will be nominated by the department for awards worth $5,000 each, from Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. The number of awards will depend on the amount of funds available.


  • new and returning students can apply, and awardees can apply to renew the fellowships
  • must be registered full-time for the coming academic year
  • students who already receive, or who have accepted to receive, another fellowship worth $12,000 or more in the coming academic year, are not eligible


  • GEF Application Form with instructions  
  • DEADLINE to apply: July 30 NOON to christine [dot] laberge [at] mcgill [dot] ca (Christine Laberge) (late or incomplete applications will not be considered)
  • evaluation by the Graduate Advisory Committee will use a point system based on:
    1. CGPA
    2. publications
    3. research proposal
    4. previous research experience (M.Sc. students only)
  • awards will be distributed in September


    • supervisors of awardees must commit a minimum stipend contribution of $16,000 for M.Sc. students and $18,000 for Ph.D. students, from grants or other sources

    Tuition Assistance

    Fellowships for Tuition Assistance are awarded in compensation for tuition fees higher than Quebec-resident students. The awards are as follows:

    M.Sc. 2nd year $2,000 $3,500
    Ph.D. first 3 years $6,000


    • students starting their degree program in Fall 2011 onwards are eligible
    • international M.Sc. students fast-tracking to the Ph.D. program in Fall 2011 onwards are eligible
    • international Ph.D. students enrolled before Fall 2011 are not eligible, but will continue to be supported by the MIDAs program
    • no application is needed
    • awards will be distributed in September


    • the awards are in addition to stipends and cannot be part of the minimum contribution required for the merit fellowships
