Dr. Maria Ferraiuolo (graduate student from Dr. Sonenberg's lab) has been
awarded the Gordon A. Maclachlan Prize. This prize is given to an outstanding
McGill graduate receiving a graduate degree in 2006-2007 in any discipline of
the Biological and Health Sciences, in recognition of her exemplary academic
record, excellence of the thesis and the significance of the research. (PLACE

Dr. Desiree Fong (Dr. Albert Berghuis's lab) is the recipient of the 2007
Award of Excellence of the Academy of Great Montrealers. In collaboration
with the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal, this award is to recognize
outstanding contributions of Montreal universities, their affiliated schools
and specialized institutions to the economic, scientific, social and cultural
development of Montreal.
Dr. Albert Berghuis was appointed full Professor.
The International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD) is pleased to
announce that Magdalena Korczynska (Berghuis Lab) has been selected as a
recipient of a 2008 Ludo Frevel Crystallography Scholarship Award. The Ludo
Frevel Crystallographic Scholarship is an award to support the education and
research program of promising graduate students in crystallography-related
fields.
Dr. Vassilios Papadopoulos (Director, Research Institute of the MUHC) and
Dr. Qutayba Hamid (Meakins-Christie Laboratories) were made associate members
in our department.
Dr. Imed Gallouzi (June 1, 2007) was successful in being promoted to
Associate Professor with tenure.
Dr. Nahum Sonenberg has been chosen to receive the 2007 Roche Diagnostics
Award from the Canadian Society of Biochemistry, Molecular & Cellular
Biology, which recognizes outstanding achievement in research in one or more
of the fields of biochemistry, molecular or cellular biology undertaken in
Canada by a Canadian Scientist.
Dr. Nicole Beauchemin was named to the Faculty Honour List for
Educational Excellence in recognition of her contributions to teaching in the
Faculty of Medicine.

Dr. Reza Salavati from the Institute of Parasitology and McGill Centre
for Bioinformatics was made an associate member of our department.
Dr. Jose Teodoro was appointed assistant professor in Biochemistry and

University researchers have been named Howard Hughes
Medical Institute (HHMI) International Research Scholars in recognition
of their outstanding accomplishments in biomedicine.
Dr. Michel Tremblay has been elected a fellow of the Royal Society of
Canada.

Michel Tremblay was awarded the Jeanne and J.-Louis Lévesque Chair in
Cancer Research.
Dr. Nahum Sonenberg was elected to the prestigious Academy of
Arts and Sciences. He has also been elected as a Fellow of the Royal
Society of London.
Maria Colonna, Administrative Officer, won the 2006 Ninth
Annual Anne McCormick Award for Excellence in the Faculty of Medicine.
This award recognizes excellence in job performance by support staff.
Dr. Jacques Genest from the McGill University Health Centre was made an
associate member of our Department.
Dr. Ted Meighen and Dr. Cliff Stanners both receive the title of
Professor Emeritus.
Dr. Kalle Gehring was appointed full professor.
Dr. Bhushan Nagar was appointed assistant professor in our Department.

Dr. Maya Saleh from the McGill University Hospital Centre was made an
associate member of our Department.
Magdalena Korczynska from the Albert Berghuis lab was awarded the
ACA-IUCr Poster Prize for best poster from a graduate student form the North
American continent.
Leo Lin, from Ted Meighen’s lab, won the Governor General’s Gold Medal
for top graduate in Natural Sciences and Engineering. This award was based on
academic record, excellent thesis and significance of research. He also won
the Gordon a. Maclachlan Prize and the Thomas Haliburton Henry Award for most
outstanding McGill graduate receiving a Ph.D. in Biological and Health
Sciences.
2004-2005
Dr. John Silvius was awarded the Principal’s Prize for Excellence in
Teaching.
Dr. Nahum Sonenberg receives the $100,000 Killam Prize for the health
sciences.
Colin Lister, from Nahum Sonenberg’s lab, is the winner of the McGill’s
Principal’s Award for Administrative and Support Staff in the Technical
category.
Dr. Imed Gallouzi was awarded a Tier II Canada Research Chair.
Dr. Jerry Pelletier and Dr. Alain Nepveu were both made James McGill
Professors.
Dr. Philip Branton was named member of the Advisory Committee on
Research, Alberta Cancer Board.

Dr. Katherine Cianflone was appointed adjunct member. She received a
Chercheur Senior, Canadian Lipoprotein Conference. She was also made a Canada

Dr. Mark Featherstone, an associate member and Simon Wing an adjunct
member, received the Chercheur-National du Fond de la Recherche en Sante du
Quebec.

Council/Dept. of Health Visiting Fellow in Genetics in Health Care.
Dr. Peter Siegel, was made an associate member in our Department. He
received the Harold E. Johns Award (Biomedical Research Category); the
CCS/NCIC research scientist award, Department of Medicine; the Simone and
Morris Fast Award for Oncology, Department of Medicine.
Dr. Martine Raymond, from the Institute for Research in Immunology and
Cancer (IRIC), was made an adjunct member in the Department.
Nadeem Siddiqui, graduate student in Kalle Gehring’s lab, took the gold
medal in the student poster competition at the BioNorth 2004 conference.
Ahmad Mirza from the Albert Berghuis lab received the 2005 Ludo Frevel

Jasmine Abella from Morag Park’s lab, won the top honour for best oral
presentation at the 5th Annual McGill Biomedical Graduate Conference.
Sabina Paglialung (Cianflone lab), won first prize at the 5th Annual
McGill Biomedical Graduation Conference for her Research Proposal Poster
Presentation.
Karine Turcotte (Philippe Gros lab), won the Presidential Student Award
for the Best Student Presentation at the annual meeting of the Society for
Leukocyte Biology.
2003-2004
Fourteen full members and five associate members of the Department have
competitive salary awards from per-reviewed agencies.
Dr. Morag Park received the Jeanne Manery-Fisher Memorial Lectureship for
the CSBMCB.
Dr. Alain Nepveu was appointed full professor in the Department.
Dr. Albert Berghuis was awarded a Tier I Canada Research Chair in
structural biology.
Dr. William Muller received the Merck-Frosst Award for Excellence in
research, Department of Medicine and a Canada Research Chair in Molecular
Oncology.
David Breckenridge, a graduate student from the laboratory of Gordon
Shore, won the Governor-General of Canada’s Gold Medal for his Ph.D. thesis.
Dr. Rose Johnstone received the France Canada Visiting Scientist Exchange
program, joint award from CIHR and Inserm France.
Dr. Charles Scriver, an associate member, was the recipient of the
founders Award, CCMG, Edmonton, Alberta. He was also appointed as Annual
Clinical Science Lecturer, Karolinska Institute.
Dr. Jacques Drouin, adjunct member, received the Eli Lilly Award from the
Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism.
Dr. Maxime Bouchard was appointed assistant professor in the Department
of Biochemistry and McGill Cancer Centre.
Dr. Martin Latterich from the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology was
made an associate member.
Dr. Karen Meerovitch from Advance Pharma was appointed an adjunct member.
Dr. John Bergeron, Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology
and an associate member of our Department, received the McLaughlin Medal of
the Royal Society of Canada.
Caroline Baril, Nadeem Siddiqi, Sathesh Bhat, Jaigi Mathai and Nadia
Dube, five biochemistry graduate students took prizes at the 4th Annual
McGill Biomedical Graduate Conference.
The Bergeron and Thomas labs were featured in the Gazette, May 19, 2004,
for their publication on a central enzyme (UDP-glucose, a glycoprotein
glucosyltransferase that can detect areas of disorder (misfolding) and
activity of proteins in cells. This discovery could help provide targets for
treating degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and cystic
fibrosis.
2002-2003
Dr. Nahum Sonenberg has been awarded the Robert L. Noble prize of the
National Cancer Institute of Canada.
Dr. Jacques Drouin, an adjunct member of the Department was elected a
fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
Dr. Xiang-Jiao Yang, an associate member, was awarded the Harold E. Johns
award from the NCIC.
Dr. Rhoda Blostein was the winner of the 2003 Women of Distinction award
from the Women’s Y.
Dr. Morag Park received a Dawson Scholar award from McGill University.
Dr. Cliff Stanners received the Jeanne and J.-Louis Lévesque Chair of
Cancer Research.
Dr. Arnim Pause was made an associate professor. Arnim received the
Max-Planck Five Year Endowment, Max-Planck Society and the Canada Foundation
for Innovation Award for Infrastructure.
Dr. Michel Tremblay received the McGill Medical Ambassador, and also
Ambassador from the University of Sherbrooke.
Dr. Karine Auclair was made an associate member of our department. She
also received the "Programme Strategique de Professeurs-Chercheurs" from
FQRNT.
Dr. Katherine Cianflone, associate member, received the Sara Louise King
Award, Cardiology Department and the Dedicated Service Award, Canadian Heart
& Stroke Foundation.
Maureen Caron, our student affairs officer, won the Principal's Staff
Award.
2001-2002
Dr. Philip Branton, a former Chair of the department who is the Director
of the Cancer Institute of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, has
been elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
Drs. Morag Park, Jerry Pelletier, Nicole Beauchemin, Michel Tremblay were
all made full professor.
Dr. Morag Park was appointed the Sal and Diane Guerrera Chair in Cancer
Genetics.
Drs. Albert Berghuis, Imed Gallouzi, William Muller and David Thomas were
all awarded Canada Research Chairs together with the associated Canadian
Foundation for Innovation awards.
Dr. Philippe Gros was appointed as a Distinguished Investigator of the
CIHR and recently as a James McGill professor.
Drs. Jerry Pelletier and Morag Park were appointed as Senior
Investigators of the CIHR.
Anne-Claude Gingras, a graduate student from the Sonenberg laboratory,
recently graduated and was awarded the Governor General's Gold Medal and the
Prix d'excellence de l'Académie des grands Montréalais.
Dr. Nahum Sonenberg was made a James McGill professor, a Distinguished
investigator of the CIHR, and a Howard Hughes International Fellow.
Dr. David Thomas was the principal investigator on the successful CFI
award for $43M for the new Life Sciences Building.

Dr. Kalle Gehring won an award as Chercheur-boursier of the FRSQ.
Dr. David Thomas was awarded a Canada Research Chair.
Drs. Branton, Braun, Gehring and Thomas were awarded CIHR, NSERC grants
and contracts amounting to $1.5M over the next 3 years. Dr. Jerry Pelletier
has been awarded a $1.2M total Terry Fox New Frontiers Initiative grant from
the NCI for novel approaches for targeting RNA with small molecules, in a
collaboration with Masad Dahma (Chemistry, McGill) and Prabhat Arya (SIMS,
NRC, Ottawa).
Dr. Bill Muller has been offered a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair at the
Molecular Oncology Group and will be cross-appointed to the Biochemistry
Department.

Alex Geoffrey Therien, a graduate student from the Blostein laboratory,

Dr. Rhoda Blostein was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada
Drs. Alice Vrielink and Kalle Gehring were successful in being promoted
to Associate Professor with tenure.
Dr. Michel Tremblay has been selected as Director of the McGill Cancer
Centre.
Dr. Philippe Gros named a member of the new CIHR Governing Council.
Dr. John Bergeron, an Associate Member and Chair of the Department of
Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill was named as the ninth Thomson Lecturer of
the Department of Biochemistry.
Dr. Vincent Giguère was promoted to Full Professor.
Dr. Marc Therrien was made an adjunct member of our Department.
1998-1999
Dr. Michel Tremblay received considerable acclaim for generating, in
collaboration with colleagues at Merck-Frosst, a protein tyrosine phosphatase
1B 'knockout' mouse that will serve as a critical model for studies on
diabetes and may aid in the development of pharmaceuticals related to weight
control. Dr. Tremblay also spearheaded a CFI proposal that will bring in some
funds to the Faculty. In addition, Dr. Tremblay and Dr. Morag Park obtained
seed funding to launch "Tyrogene", a research and development company.
Drs. Philippe Gros and Morag Park each were the recipients of major
special research grant awards. Philippe was granted a Burroughs Welcome Fund
New Initiative Grant for work in malaria. Morag was the recipient of a
special grant from the Montreal Beast Cancer Foundation which will fund a
functional genomics group in breast cancer that also includes Drs. Jerry
Pelletier, Gordon Shore, Vincent Giguère, Xiang-Jiao Yang, and Alain Nepveu.
Dr. Annette Herscovics was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada
last year.
