Biblical Studies Professional Organizations

Canadian Society of Biblical Studies (CSBS)

The oldest humanities academic society in Canada. The Society provides a meeting place for those interested in all aspects of the academic study of the Bible - Hebrew Bible, Septuagint or New Testament - in their literary and historical contexts. Many of our members work, for example, in the Ancient Near East, post-biblical Judaism, Hellenistic religion and philosophy, archaeology, and Christian origins beyond the New Testament. Its annual meeting occurs in late May or early June, in conjunction with the Congress of Canadian learned societies sponsored by the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS). Members of the Society receive the journal Studies in Religion / Sciences Religieuses, which offers a refereed publication outlet for articles in our fields of study. In addition, Wilfrid Laurier University Press publishes Studies in Christianity and Judaism, a special series devoted to Canadian monographs in early Judaism and Christian origins. The Society annually awards five Awards/Prizes: two for student essays and three for publication and research in our fields of study.

The Society of Biblical Literature's (SBL) mission is to foster all aspects of biblical scholarship.
